I despise Jimmy Carter, but the 55 mph speed limit was imposed under Nixon. Thank you.

True.

And Nixon actually wanted it to be 50 mph for passenger vehicles and 55 mph for trucks.

PS - As part of efforts to bring about better compliance with the ridiculous 55 mph speed limit, Jimmy Carter DID bring us the 85 mph speedometer.
