Nearly a month after American authorities arrested Indias deputy consul general in New York, Devyani Khobragade, outside her childrens school and charged her with paying her Indian domestic worker a salary below the minimum wage, bilateral relations remain tense. Indias government has reacted with fury to the mistreatment of an official enjoying diplomatic immunity, and public indignation has been widespread and nearly unanimous. So, has an era of steadily improving ties between the two countries come to an end?
Judging from Indian leaders statements, it would certainly seem so. Indias mild-mannered Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared that Khobragades treatment was deplorable. National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon called her arrest despicable and barbaric, and Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid refused to take a conciliatory phone call from US Secretary of State John Kerry.
Emotions have run high in Indias Parliament and on television talk shows as well. Writing to her diplomatic colleagues after her arrest, Khobragade, who has denied the charges against her, noted that she broke down many times, owing to the indignities of repeated handcuffing, stripping, and cavity searches, swabbing, and to being held with common criminals and drug addicts. A former Indian foreign minister, Yashwant Sinha, has publicly called for retaliation against gay American diplomats in India, whose sexual orientation and domestic arrangements are now illegal after a recent Supreme Court ruling. The government has not taken him seriously, but his suggestion indicates how inflamed passions have become.

Not sure what to make of this incident, except that the Indian government and population are furious.
Is 0bama trying to sabotage relations with another vital ally? The thought has certainly crossed my mind.
The US Attorney in New York was born in INDIA.
Many Indian immigrants have a strong dislike for India and the culture of the subcontinent.
The alleged strip-search video is apparently a hoax:
The Indian people are normally measured and conservative. To hear this sort of commentary out of India is troubling to say the least.
don’t get this. thought diplomatic immunity would cover this, seems to cover everything else.
He is indeed.
Some background here:
Of course (Democrat-run) America is ugly.
B*tt ugly.
MSNBC ugly.
Obamadork ugly.
We need an ugly-excision.
Stat.
As for New York...you ain’t seen really ugly yet.
When you listen to pissant types like Carney, and the way we’ve treated our allies during the past few years, it’s clear we’re a bunch jerks in the eyes of the world.
We have suitless incompetent at the helm who does nothing but campaign and play golf. Everything he does is political and with an eye on his poll numbers.
We have a long way to go. I look for this guy to be tested. China will continue to provoke its neighbors, Russia with poke us in the eye, and we’ll see the Iran betrayal within the next six months or so.
On the home front, more unraveling and discourse esp with Hillary entering her hat in the ring.
Could this be a case of a man rebuffed and deciding to bring retribution?
I disagree with the notion of the return of the ‘ugly’ American. With the NYPD as an example I would say that we are seeing the rise of the Dangerous American.
Was she in a different caste then his family? Could be why
Why should anyone believe anything claimed by the current adminstration? How many times does the dog have to bite? If I worked for State I’d make the same claim. “Nothing to see here folks. Just a simple misunderstanding and no harm occurred.”

Because we know the State Department ALWAYS tells the truth( *cough* *cough* Benghazi,/b>)
Yes, his strategy is counting on Indian authorities confusing the attitudes and actions of American government employees with those of American citizens civilians, and desires negative consequences on American citizen civilians outside the US for optics.
Dictators always create a threat to distract negative attention from themselves.
“India’s Minister of State for Human Resource Development”
Yea, and here in the US we have HR departments ramming diversity down our throats. Apparently they don’t do that in India.
Yes, she is indeed HOT
IF this story is as reported, somebody screwed up a lot.
This would be somewhat understandable had it occurred with local law enforcement in Podunk.
But US State Department Diplomatic Security Service agents really ought to be up on this stuff.
While Obama is undoubtedly happy that there are problems with the US India relationship, this strategy would cause him heartburn. The US official policy of aiding and spreading the homosexual lifestyle around the world in contravention to local laws and mores needs a forceful push back.
