Yes, nepotism, carpetbagging and cruelty to her sister hurt -- but Cheneys troubles show a movement near its end.
OK, Liz Cheney was a carpetbagger from Virginia who had little to sell in Wyoming besides her fathers connections. Still, Vice President Dick Cheneys daughter was not nearly as ludicrous a Senate candidate as Christine ODonnell of Delaware, or Joe Miller of Alaska, or Sharron Angle of Nevada, or Joe Buck of Colorado, or well, you get the point all of whom won their 2010 Tea Party primaries against respectable conservative mainstream Republicans.
That was 2010. On Sunday the 2014 midterm season began with Liz Cheney calling off her doomed Wyoming Senate primary campaign against conservative Mike Enzi, citing unspecified serious health issues in her family. We sincerely hope those issues are resolved soon.
But the Tea Partys health issues are also a problem. Despite Cheneys high-profile campaign troubles, she had a lot of political assets that lesser 2010 challengers couldnt rely on and yet those candidates won anyway. Cheney is leaving the race trailing Enzi by more than 50 points. 2014 is going to be an unpredictable midterm election, but Cheneys failure suggests its not going to be a cakewalk for come-from-nowhere Tea Party candidates or opportunists like Cheney who pretend to be Tea Party devotees.
Sure, Cheney only moved to Wyoming in 2012, and she had that embarrassing screw-up with her fishing license. Probably the biggest blow to her candidacy was her high-profile, classless row with her sister Mary over gay marriage. Liz took to Fox News to say she didnt support gay marriage, even though shed attended Marys to wife Heather Poe and Mary and Heather took to Facebook to chide Liz for either cruelty or hypocrisy, depending on what she really believed....

Has it imploded more that Obamacare?
I was VERY MUCH AGAINST Cheney getting into that race.
However, I am willing to accept the possibility that a serious health issue has convinced her to get out.
The only one calling her a tea party candidate seems to be the Democrats.
LOL at these morons calling Liz Cheney a “Tea Party Candidate” since when?
I would be interested to see what Joan Walsh, editor-at-large had to day about the Hillary! senate bid in NY.
I am willing to bet the word ‘carpetbagging’ was quite absent from her reportage.
Not that I’m a LC fan. But if it were not for double standards, the left would haZ none.
This author is ignorant. Enzi was more conservative and more of a Tea Party candidate than Liz Cheney.
Has Ms. Walsh ever commented on that carpetbagger Hillary? Or, the other democrat carpetbaggers?
Dear Salon,
Let me point you to the White House. Nothing more ridiculous than for a nation to elected an unqualified, commie rock sucking muslim to the highest office in the land.
Chew on Bengazi, national debt, health care debacle, fast and furious, IRS scandals, etc.....
Liz Cheney and the Tea Party are as close as Hillary and the truth!
But nobody wanted to go against D. Cheney and say anything about his daughter publicly. They just thought it and polled it, and she dropped out.
It’s salon.com
there is more incisive political commentary on “The Onion”
I won’t argue that TP efforts at the Senate level haven’t been anything to crow about. We need to do a better job vetting the folks in that area, no question. But the TP has also been very, very successful in getting conservatives elected to the House. So it is quite premature to say the Tea Party’s run is over.
It will be a cold day in hell nefore I’ll let Salon tell me who the conservatives are
Get used to it. Every ill-conceived candidacy that implodes or goes off the rails will be blamed on the Tea Party by an ascendant chorus of media.
Joan Walsh is a nasty bitch who sucks up to Chris Matthews on a daily basis.
This article brings to mind the old saying, “If you’re taking fire, you’re over the target.”
The Tea Party is about principles, not principals. Those principles have been taking fire from the Left, and are going to keep taking fire from the Left, but they’re winning principles. That scares the Left silly, so we get silly articles like this one.
It does not matter that some of the TEA party candidates have been less-than-stellar, because they DEFEATED the GOP establishment.
So if a less-than-stellar candidate can defeat the GOP selected elite, the DEMS would have no trouble either.
The GOP needs to learn that, and run some good candidates who are ALSO TEA PARTY supported... and not abondone the GOP candidate if they don’t get their chosen guy in there
And...As you pointed out, the TEA Party has had good success with the House. Eventually, some of these politically seasoned representatives will run for the Senate.
Since she does not exactly qualify as TEA Party material, I believe the obituaries of said party are a bit premature. She came across as less conservative than the one she challenged.
