Tea Party debacle implodes: Liz Cheney quits Senate race

Yes, nepotism, carpetbagging and cruelty to her sister hurt -- but Cheney’s troubles show a movement near its end.

OK, Liz Cheney was a carpetbagger from Virginia who had little to sell in Wyoming besides her father’s connections. Still, Vice President Dick Cheney’s daughter was not nearly as ludicrous a Senate candidate as Christine O’Donnell of Delaware, or Joe Miller of Alaska, or Sharron Angle of Nevada, or Joe Buck of Colorado, or … well, you get the point – all of whom won their 2010 Tea Party primaries against respectable conservative mainstream Republicans.

That was 2010. On Sunday the 2014 midterm season began with Liz Cheney calling off her doomed Wyoming Senate primary campaign against conservative Mike Enzi, citing unspecified “serious health issues” in her family. We sincerely hope those issues are resolved soon.

But the Tea Party’s health issues are also a problem. Despite Cheney’s high-profile campaign troubles, she had a lot of political assets that lesser 2010 challengers couldn’t rely on – and yet those candidates won anyway. Cheney is leaving the race trailing Enzi by more than 50 points. 2014 is going to be an unpredictable midterm election, but Cheney’s failure suggests it’s not going to be a cakewalk for come-from-nowhere Tea Party candidates — or opportunists like Cheney who pretend to be Tea Party devotees.

Sure, Cheney only moved to Wyoming in 2012, and she had that embarrassing screw-up with her fishing license. Probably the biggest blow to her candidacy was her high-profile, classless row with her sister Mary over gay marriage. Liz took to Fox News to say she didn’t support gay marriage, even though she’d attended Mary’s to wife Heather Poe – and Mary and Heather took to Facebook to chide Liz for either cruelty or hypocrisy, depending on what she really believed....

I’m a vindictive a$$hole and I know it. I believe that every RINO that goes down in flames in the primaries to a Tea Party endorsed candidate is a huge victory for liberty. If they end up beating the DemonRat in the general; well that is just icing on the cake.

Exactly!! Nobody ever, to this day, has ever brought up the carpetbagging issue with Hillary Clinton.

Nobody, to this day, has ever brought up how the Clintons and their political muscle pushed aside actual Democrats who actually live in New York from running for the Senate.

Nobody, to this day, has brought up that the Clintons picked a Democrat leaning state for Hillary to run in.

Nobody, to this day, has ever asked, why didn’t Hillary run for political office in her home state of Arkansas, when she decided to have her own political career.

I guess that’s just the way it is. Liberals criticize Republicans for certain things, for which they would never criticize a fellow liberal.

Intellectual honesty is not among the major qualities of liberals.

If all the talk show ‘guests’ from the GOP ever actually wanted to derail Hillary!, all they would have to do is say “Well (whatever question you asked) isn’t important. What is important is how the media refuses to ask the same questions of Democrats that they do non-Democrats. Take Hillary for instance...”

And refuse to discuss anything else. Every ‘guest’ every show/article, EVERY time.

The media could either discuss or have nothing to report on. If they took this tactic, the public would quickly tire of boring TV/media and start demanding to be entertained..er I mean informed.

Ratings would ensure it.

That’s not important. What is important is the fact that the media refuses to ask the same questions of Democrats that they do of republicans.

Se how easy it is?

;)

you and me both

A defeatr of a democrat in the (GOP) primaries is just as good as a defeat of any other democrat.

If they go on to defeat the ACTUAL dem candidate, then great!

The GOP had to be taught that if they abandon the TEA party they hand the election to the democrats, even if they win the primary. Most GOP rino’s work harder to defeat a republicanin the primaries than they work to defeat the Democraps anyway

Exactly correct.

All the GOP loyalists have yet to show how a Republican gutting our military and their benefits, legalizing gay marriage/abortion, funding Obamacare or funding terrorists via their support and votes in DC is a ‘lesser evil’.

They scream real loud about it though.

In a couple cases, I would agree with you. Ken Buck was at least as good as any of the more established GOP candidates. He lost a close, tough race, but ran it well. I’d also say Alaska was a plus. Joe Miller, for all his warts, probably would have beaten the Democratic candidate had Murkowski not run as a 3rd party candidate (and pulled out her bag of dirty tricks) to keep “her” seat from us peasants.

In others though, I would have to disagree. Indiana 2012 comes to mind. Mourdock was a disaster. Dick Lugar had long gone astray from his conservative roots, but he was also a 30 point plus shoe-in against Joe Donnelly. No way that seat would have gone Democratic had Lugar (or a decent conservative candidate) won the nomination.

Delaware is another one. I have no great love for Mike Castle and his lifetime ACU rating of 51. But, the fact remains he’d never lost an election in Delaware. He probably would have defeated Chris Coons and given the GOP a pickup. Admittedly a squishy RINO pickup, but a pickup nonetheless. Christine O’Donnell, by contrast, had been obliterated in two previous Senate runs and was a no-hoper even before the “I’m not a witch” nonsense came up.

I get what you’re saying, and I agree the GOP-E needs to understand that business as usual isn’t good enough for we conservatives.. I’m just sayin’ that on our end, we need to kick the tires a little bit better on some of these folks running as the alternative.

I am willing to bet the word ‘carpetbagging’ was quite absent from her reportage.

It better be absent or else it would be homophobic. Oh, sorry -- you said carpetbagging. That's not what I thought you said.

I agree. The Tea Party has brought some strong people into the House, and the future for these folks is bright. Some may go on to be Senators, and others will win governorships, which is good for the cause as well.

I’m just sayin’ we’ve had a few bad missteps at the Senate level, and a little more scrutiny and vetting might be prudent in the future.

You just don't see this kind of analysis (Joan Walsh is a hack, also similar article at NJ) for Princess Caroline Kennedy. And she's been properly thanked with an ambassadorial reward.

“Liz” Cheney is NOT and has NEVER been “Tea Party”. What she IS is the Daughter of a RINO/Ford “Faction”/GOP-e er. She has NO and has NEVER HAD ANY “Connection” to or with Wyoming. That makes her a CLASSIC Carpet Bagger. She need to stay in VA where she DOES have “Connections”!
