Despite the fact that she’s an idiot “Sarah Silverman” is a pretty nice sounding name, and I don’t think I’d change it, if it were mine. And even though they were victimized and abused I imagine there are many German Jews who are proud of their heritage, or at the very least proud of their family’s name.
I love my own name, and could never consider changing it, but I agree that might not always be the case. I esp. like when someone in law enforcement has the name “lawless” or “savage” for example. But there’s got to be a good story behind some of these names.

It IS a pretty sounding name, Sarah being an old, old Jewish name STRAIGHT out of the old Testament.

As for German Jews being proud of their heritage? I doubt if too many are proud of that German heritage. The Germans did produce a zillion geniuses and things to be proud of but...I dunno.

*When I visited Austria some years ago we had an Austrian guide who said with a laugh: "We keep trying to convince the world that Hitler was German and Beethoven was Austrian." I didn't think that was humorous.

**I was in Hamburg a while back on a tour bus. The guide was pointing out the LEGAL brothels to us. She made a point of saying how ENLIGHTENED Europeans were having legal brothels.
I COULDN'T help myself!!!! My loud, clear, crisp teacher voice popped up: "Yes, isn't that wonderful?? Having your daughters, mothers and sisters lying on a bed, flat on their backs, with their legs up in the air with a TOTAL stranger? Isn't that SWEET?"
There was instant, IMMEDIATE silence. Not a word, even from the guide. I was SO right that NO one cold utter a sound for 15 minutes.

***I never heard the name "lawless" before but "savage"--Michael Savage. I always liked what he said but his SCREAMING got REAL old, REAL FAST.

****I also got tired of STUPIDS saying that prostitution was the oldest "profession" in the world. POPPYCOCK. Prostitution didn't happen until humanity had PLENTY of spare time to waste. The OLDEST professions were:
hunter
fisherman
warrior
cook
healer
------------------------------------
It was all about survival first, not screwing total strangers for a price.

“I never heard the name “lawless” before...”

It’s not that uncommon, I’ve seen it a few times, but the first time I ever noticed it was a woman named Betty (I think it was that) Lawless, she was the head of the board of elections in Hudson County. I’m sure Ms. Lawless was a fine, upstanding woman, but it did seem quite amusing in a place renowned for voting by the deceased, etc.

I also saw a very odd name once: Forgotson, that’s probably the oddest I’ve seen.

I guess you are right about the oldest professions, I’ve always thought ‘messenger’ is a very old job too. I used to make jokes about that when I worked for a messenger service!

And Micheal Savage is a nut (he kind of lives up to his name), but I heard a great rant by him once, saying how the feminists and planned parenthood should all go over to the Muslim world and tell those folks to start killing their babies, see how that would go over. I loved it!

“Yes isn’t that SWEET?” OMG! You are a rabble-rouser and a troublemaker. In short, I like it.
