The Australian Maritime Safety Authority this morning said weather conditions in the Antarctic had improved and those marooned on the MV Akademik Shokalskiy would soon reach the end of their ordeal.

"Wind in the area is now down to 10 knots and visibility has improved. Weather conditions are expected to remain favourable over the next 36 hours," a spokeswoman for AMSA said.

"The helicopter on board the Chinese flagged vessel Xue Long will be used to rescue the passengers from the MV Akademik Shokalskiy."

Wouldn’t be surprised if the helicopter pilots get a lecture about the carbon footprint of their aircraft.

Make Chris Turney winter over, just like his hero Mawson had to.

If the helo breaks thru the ice it will be due to global warming.
If the helo lands safely on the ice it will be due to global warming.
If the helo hits strong winds it will be due to global warming.
If the helo hits no wind wind it will be due to global warming.

"So what happens to the boat?"

Sounds like the 22 crew members are staying with. There is still a few weeks of summer left and a larger icebreaker could yet come to the rescue.

I wonder about he future career path of the ship's Captain.

Reminds me of when the Sea Shepperd ditched their smashed up boat in the Antarctic to continue chasing the whalers. “Pollution-Its ok when we do it!”

Why do I get the feeling this is NOT going to turn out well?

These folks are within an inch of karma, so a rescue seems rather out of place. Maybe that's it.

Besides, a Chicom helicopter rescue doesn't generate the warm fuzzies.

This could turn bad in a hurry.
I understand they are going to ferry in their
own ground crew. If something was to go wrong
they could end up with 6 or 10 more mouths to feed.
The south polar region is unforgiving.

The helicopter on board the Chinese flagged vessel Xue Long>>>>>>

Small helicopter is what I get from freepers. It will have to make quite a few trips to get those (LSD) trippers off their love boat

According to informed sources the rescue mission is being directed by General Sum Ting Wong.

I wonder if they have satisfied their curiosity as to how much damage global warming has done to the Antarctic Ice Shield.

Crew Repairing Shell Plating Of Ice-trapped Russian Ship In Antarctic

"An icebreaker is on its way to rescue the Academician Shokalsky.
The ice shield is 50 meters thick in that area, the source said."

(Note: 50 meters thick = 164 feet of ice)

"Meanwhile, the crew is finalizing repairs of the ship's shell plating."

"The ship's shell plating was ruptured on the starboard, 1.8 meters above the waterline."
