Sad to say, I’ve even met recent young vets who have figured out how to scheme and scam the VA. (claims for tinitus seem harder to disprove so that was one on his list of planned attempts) He even knew the formula for percentage and amounts.

It’s seeminginly even encouraged in out-processing briefings with a wink and a nod.

Very discouraging.

The new trend is to make people file for VA disability and have everybody leaving active duty get a VA physical. The good news is that they make sure people don't slip through the cracks. The bad news is you don't have to try very hard to qualify for something. The running joke is "tinitus, 10%, and you can't prove I don't have it."

Another interesting one is sleep apnea. Now unless you suffered some kind of facial or neck injury, I don't know how sleep apnea could be service related, but for a while they were giving 50% for that. That is more than some kids are getting who got really banged up in combat.

I got 20% for a really banged up arm in an aircraft mishap, but only 10% for much more problematic back issues related to 20 years flying tactical aircraft with really poorly designed seats.
