My son is looking at engineering colleges. The makers they send feature an overwhelming preponderance of young ladies. As if boys are not really welcome. It infuriates my wife

They are probably seeking those who can get a free ride from financial aid as well, like Section 8 housing; for some owners a regular check is worth the property turning into a dump. Same goes for schools.
The worst part of it is how unprepared so many of the featured minorities are for college; it is a feel-good scam, in which they end up with nothing to offer prospective employers.
I recommend going to a non-engineering school with a good engineering program. Being in a 90% male environment for too long is not healthy and causes weird things.
I think you should have some fun with schools your son is not considering. Call and tell them that their advertising makes your son feel uncomfortable. If he were to attend, do they have programs for white male engineering students. If not, are they planning to rectify that situation? Do they have outreach programs for your son? Make them defend neglecting about a third of their students in their programs and recruiting focus.
If you need financial aid, FAFSA forms open tomorrow. The earlier you sign up for state schools, the better. Use estimated tax numbers and correct it later.
