Edison Bulb Ban Means Lights Out On Freedom: Importing 40 & 60 Watt incandescents illegal in 2014

Bulb Ban: As of Wednesday, the manufacture and import of 60- and 40-watt incandescent light bulbs will be illegal — one more setback in the fight against government interference into the daily lives of the American people.

First they came for our light bulbs. Before the onset of ObamaCare and its mandate to buy health insurance as a condition of citizenship, there was the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), one of the first things Democrats took up on retaking the House of Representatives in the 2006 elections.

A well-intentioned President George W. Bush signed the incandescent bulb ban in 2007. After all, Edison bulbs were old technology and a little energy efficiency couldn't hurt.

Yes he did sign it but the Dem had just taken control of both the house and senate. I also recall it being said that this was added into a bill that the president really wanted.

A reason can always be found to justify the sacrifice of bedrock ethics for an immediate short term objective.

The hard thing and the right thing is to remember which is fundamentally the most important and which is most in keeping with an oath to protect the constitution.

Like constantly dripping water eventually erodes rock, these small affronts to the constitution have added up over the years until the protections and guarantees of the constitution are eroded to the point the nation has been transformed into something bearing little resemblance to that intended by the Founders.

At my mom’s house, relatives would linger at the dining room table - under the chandelier with five 60-watt light bulbs.

That was probably because they were enjoying the warmth. Heating costs are approximately double cooling costs across the US so bulbs that produce heat are not a problem 66% of the time although their heating efficiency is a bit low.

You can bet your stockpile of incandescents that the Chinese will figure out a way to shave costs that also make the electronics fail sooner.

Now it seems that every member of a family - 18 and over - owns a car. That pushes gasoline usage up. The government responded by mandating that cars become more energy efficient. That reduces the amount of oil that needs to be imported

Imported oil means people have extra and are willing to sell at a lower price than our domestic oil. The government mandates all kinds of crap that reduces efficiency. The automakers respond by reducing durability and safety. The government responds by mandating more crap like airbags.

How are poor people going to light their homes? These “new and improved” bulbs cost a lot more than the old incandescent ones.

Maybe congress could pass a bill giving them subsidies to purchase the new bulbs?
