Volgograd: 'Ten dead' in second blast to hit Russian city
BBC ^ | Monday, December 30, 2013

Posted on 12/29/2013 9:19:12 PM PST by kristinn

At least 10 people have been killed and 10 others injured in an explosion on a trolleybus in the Russian city of Volgograd, Russian media report.

The blast comes a day after 17 people died in a suicide bomb attack at the central station in the city.

Security has been tightened at railway stations and airports across Russia.

Moscow is concerned militant groups could be ramping up violence in the run-up to the 2014 winter Olympic Games in the city of Sochi.

The Olympic venue is close to Russia's volatile north Caucasus region.

Volgograd lies about 900km (560 miles) south of Moscow, 650km north of the North Caucasus and 700km north-east of Sochi.

There have been three bombings in Volgograd during the last two days, but for some reason the media is not reporting the last one. Apparently, a bomb went off in as Marshuka (taxi).

I am sure Putin will ensure the party or parties involved are dealt with. I hope your wife’s family and friends are ok.

Perhaps we can get John Kerry to host a summit meeting — maybe a beer summit?

This is 400 miles from Sochi , isn’t it?

I think it would be like if like if an terrorist attack happened in Omaha.

Nobody in the mainstream national media here would care. As long as their east and west coast headquarters are safe and the pols in DC would get more security.

Doubt Putin would be in for Western versions of “peace negotiations.” I am thinking a response like the second Grozny campaign will come about. They learned the first time through Grozny that light footing it around with terrorists is deadly business.

So the Saudis won’t control their Chechen ‘clients’ after-all.......

Isn't this what the Saudis promised to Putin in a secret meeting, i.e. "you cut Assad loose, and we'll put a leash on our Chechen agents before the Olympics." He didn't cut Assad loose, and the Saudis didn't muzzle their Chechen friends, as promised.

History is full of should haves, but Russia should have cut Chechnya loose when the USSR collapsed, instead of beating it into submission, losing 30,000 troops in the process and killing God knows how many Chechen civilians. Had that happened (and this was Yeltsin’s fault, not Putin’s), Chechnya would have been just another Central Asian republic, instead of a terrorist hotbed. And all of Putin’s he-man poses and the unfortunate conservative bromance with a former KGB staff officer won’t change this fact.
