The incredible, shrinking New York

New York, whose status as the most populous state has long been ceded, will soon fall behind Florida into fourth place, a long-anticipated drop that is rife with symbolism and that could carry potentially serious economic consequences in coming years.

Additionally, notwithstanding the tax benefits that Cuomo is offering businesses who meet certain conditions, there are plenty of other economic reasons why moving to New York isn’t going to be appealing either to businesses or individuals.

Tax rates for individuals are far higher in New York than they are in Florida, for example, even in places where the upstate areas, where the cost of living is far lower than the areas in and around New York City.

Employers may find it hard to recruit the right kind of people for the jobs they need even though Governor Cuomo’s program seems to be based around trying to get businesses to move to areas close to locations of campuses of the State University of New York, obviously on the theory that these schools would provide a good recruitment class for high-tech industries most especially.

Finally, of course, there’s the question of just how much they can trust that future state legislatures or Governor’s won’t find it necessary to take away those tax breaks that are supposed to last ten years, or require businesses to certain regulations in order to continue receiving them.

When faced with those issues on one side of the ledger, and the possibility of starting a business in a state like Florida that has a long history of favorable tax rates and a political culture that makes it unlikely that there will be massive tax increases in the near future, it’s easy to see why businesses might be skeptical about making the long trek to Rochester or Buffalo.

If any business man or woman is STUPID enough to take the BAIT that Marxist Cuomo and his cronies are offering in Albany you deserve to LOSE your business because that is what will happen. The fine print of his deals means slavery.

NY will never reverse its decline until NY City stops being the tail that wags the dog. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to happen for a very long time.

Let us not forget the gun manufacturers. With the signs of a detroit like senario in it’s future and a big dope who will welcome more illegals, more handouts, more progressive utopianism AKA ACORN and the family workers party being in complete control thanks to his proud lesbian life mate mccray we can see it doesnt look good

“Plus, Winters suck there.”

That is a much bigger factor than many people realize; I’d seen a projection of population shifts within the US over the next few decades, and all of the growth in cities was happening in areas where they don’t normally reach freezing temperatures in winter. I don’t believe it was just related to heating costs; it also involved the business disruptions caused by winter weather to infrastructure (roads, mass transit systems, etc.).

These concepts would certainly explain the shift from NY to FL (at least the parts that aren’t prone to hurricanes).

I have to agree with you, which is why I left for the VERY rural countryside of Kentucky.

In 1995, I believe, I was at a ‘Lab’ getting a test done for my Dr. and there were these two elderly ladies in the waiting room with me and they were talking in that typical, ‘Brooklyn accent’, about how nice it was that there were now more ‘services’ available and that they could now get heir friends to come down next year with them.

It only got worse after that, with the housing boom, no new industry, (it kept being voted down), the horrible road conditions because of the influx of people, etc. etc.

I truly wish they had just stayed home in NY, MA and the rest of the northeast.

“I heard a NYS commercial I think on WABC77 radio that said that NYS would waive taxes for ~ 10 years to some businesses that move there, but we know its not all taxes.

Wouldn’t that be ‘giving tax subsidies to the rich’ ??”

They’ll make it up on taxing the salaries of the employees they hope to keep in NY state (especially in NYC, where they have a city income tax). During the bank bailout, NY (city & state) were fighting to allow the “rescued” banks to pay bonuses to their employees because both needed the taxes on those bonuses for their budgets.

I can’t see the dwindling number of NY taxpayers supporting a measure that has them providing police/fire protection for these companies that will certainly have hiring restrictions imposed on them (a set % of preferred minorities, for example).

“The only jobs that will be left upstate NY will be on the apple farms.”

As in NW NJ, many of those jobs are “Americans need not apply”; I’m shocked at how many Hispanics our rural cmmunities have. The poverty industry employs many along the Hudson River (Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, Albany); the welfare recipients need social workers, school teachers, cops, etc.

spoke to a resident of Buffalo who said the area use to be a dynamic job creating wonderland until unions came in making such high demands and local and state gub mints made taxes and the cost of doing bid ness so expensive in the area all the large companies left for more favorable bidness conditions elsewhere.

In my county the government is the biggest industry. It is evident from the buildings. The best maintained and largest belong to the government. Our $80 million high school sits like a queen among them all.

It is my anecdotal observation in traveling across the nation that the schools are, almost without exception, the largest and most expensive structures in any community. In my county the SS school district ( single-payer and socialist-entitlement schools) is the single largest employer with largest payroll that far exceeds any other business in the county.

“In my county the government is the biggest industry.”

This is one of the things killing NJ now; what you are describing was state-wide (causing us to have such high property taxes - 3/4 of which go to schools), and then the money ran out. Governor Christie capped our tax increases at 2%, so when the teachers’ unions demanded and got 4% raises other people lost their jobs. Cops, firemen, public works, non-unionized school staff - all were cut to feed the teachers’ unions (the de facto owners of the Democratic Party). At this point they’ve even let go teachers themselves (including tenured teachers with the least seniority); the unions won’t give concessions, and those being laid off have no private-sector jobs skills. Some of the cops are moving to other states (probably the same ones to which NJ’s tax-paying American population is fleeing), while others hang on in the hopes of getting re-hired by another department (some deal was reached where laid-off cops would be hired before any newcomers). This has basically shut out young people (who would start at lower salaries) from those jobs; there is no future for young people here in NJ in many fields (not necessarily government-related).

“It is my anecdotal observation in traveling across the nation that the schools are, almost without exception, the largest and most expensive structures in any community.”

BTW, this is exactly why neither party will enforce immigration laws; the education-industrial complex will never allow it. Pampered American teachers will be teaching classes filled with foreign anchor babies, and no politician will dare to interfere with it. Heck, in my town school crossing guards were getting full benefits; the part-time (almost seasonal) education industry has become more lucrative than most private-sector work.

The only Americans I know having multiple children are government workers; imagine what that portends for the future voting patterns of these young Americans they are breeding.

Leftist answer: "Force them to stay! Force them to operate! Force them to pay taxes to support our Utopia! Throw them in jail if they don't! Damn it, we're trying to Save the Planet (tm) here! Don't they all understand how much we care!" :)
