Actually in my experience it is true, that is with the caveats I mentioned.
What I am basically saying is a lot of people become far better athletes after they have been out of school a While and it is often expressed just like I said. I ran a 9.7 hundred yards, which I can prove.
I can’t tell you how many guys I have run across who were faster than that or so they claimed.

Just about every guy when he is about 30 years old claims 3 things. First, he played high school football, second he could run the hundred yards in under 10 seconds, and third he could bench press over 200 pounds. I guess a fourth is he could do 20 pull ups. As a man, I never ran into that fake cliche you are trying to push, you were pretty specific.

I ran a 9.7 hundred yards, which I can prove. That is very fast, but my brother did 9.6 in about 1955 (Washington State high school meet), followed by an injury and end of career.
