When a story hangs on like the one about Duck Dynastys Phil Robertsons views on gays, its because the straight and narrow of the story is bigger than the people involved or the eye of ensuing storm . This story in particular has pulled back the curtain on the chasm between two segments of the American public: the Ducks and the Other Guys.
On one side are the mighty Ducks. Theyre down home people, basic, salt of the earth, grounded, physical, real people in a real world. Theyre not necessarily right or left, red or blue. What distinguishes them from others is that they never forget that life must be survived before it can be lived. They know that survival has to do with procreation of the species, food, shelter, clothing and the effort it takes to accomplish all of it. They defend those items or persons or God, Himself, who are deemed integral to their survival and they have a healthy respect, expressed in caution, laced with suspicion, for the other, whether the other be a swamp gator, a cottonmouth, a Yankee from Harvard, the Federal Government, or movies about Liberace.
The Ducks might appear exotic to some, but theyre not. They might appear retro, but theyre not that either. The Ducks have clung to the basics for so long that, as regards themselves, words like retro or exotic are irrelevant. The Ducks start and end with survival, and survival is about function. If theres time or energy left over, then the Ducks might consider the more frivolous concerns about living life; but theyll never embrace the surface things to the degree that fashion and its timeliness demands.

I read about Phil Robertson eight years ago in the above (now defunct) magazine.
Pajama boy and his liberal counterparts depend on the shaky thread of a huge infrastructure to survive.
They have no understanding of this infrastructure, or it's ability to fail at any moment, and within three days, leave them starving.
We "Duck People" understand it quite well.
Should that infrastructure dry up, pajama boy and his buddies will be clueless as to what happened other than to know they are starving.
For "Duckies", a slight pain in the rear, but otherwise, just another day.
Cleverly disguised hit piece on DD.
Contemptible.
Yes.
An article that pretends to like the guys in DD while coming to the conclusion that they are wrong.
The author uses 2376 words to say that these guys are nice but it’s such a shame they’re such bigots and regard gayness with fear.
Even manages to throw in a comparison to Nazis by saying they’re definitely NOT Nazis.
It was boring. The beards & long hair look uncomfortable & nasty. The scenes seem scripted, contrived. It doesn't hold a candle to Deadliest Catch or Gold Rush.
Been there, done that every day for years in a small southern town. The women shop, cook, & gab. The men pick at (tease) each other. Beard growing is an activity, a form of entertainment! It gets real dull, real fast.
For people unfulfilled by hunting, fishing, church, & the local sports teams, there is always booze, adultery (very popular), & gambling.
I don't watch "Real housewives of ...." because I don't much care what they are saying & doing. For the same reason, I wont watch "Real Duck Call Manufacturers of West Monroe, La."
And all that means exactly...what...as far as Phil Robertson's right to express his religious beliefs are concerned?
Yeehah!
Well true enough the scenes are scripted and yes, somewhat contrived (though the Duck boys at least vet them before acting them).
It is a hoot to read their story, though. That’s real life and is better than the shows. And yeah, it’s redneck success through and through, with all the trip-ups and triumphs that entails.
