Kart pinged me to you, just to offer my legendary comment:

Never, EVER, barter your ammo.

During my downrange time overseas, we had no problems with ammunition. Burned through a few magazines? No worries, First Sergeant will be by shortly with the LOGPAC, and you can reload. What, Top ain't coming yet? no problem you can cross-level with Jonesy.

But now this is SHTF. There's no First Sergeant, no LOGPAC, and the neighbor next to you would just as soon shoot you and take all your ammo (and your daughters) for later use.

Oh, you want to trade "ballistic wampum"? Sure, no problem! Hey guys, see what that doofus just traded us? What else does he got, if he can spare ammo to trade?

And at 0300, you have your former trading partner, and his boyfriends, storming your house, taking your stash of supplies (and your daughters), and laughing at you as you bleed out on the carpet.

The bullet you trade in the morning will be shot back at you in the night.

Never, EVER, barter your ammo.

I am one of them. I grew up with guns. Not slammin you, but when you mention competitive, or a thousand rounds a week, that’s a whole new ball game. I get where you are comin from. It comes down to the needs of the individual.

One has to be smart about it—just don’t set up a flea market stand. :-)

“Absolutely, ammo would be a primo barter item...”

Big mistake, likely fatal mistake.

In the bad times, EVETYHING, ANY barter action can be a bad mistake. You could be followed for ANY reason, not just ammo. Bartering ammo can just as easily mean that you are well-armed!

“ANY barter action can be a bad mistake.”

Exactly - store what you need so you don’t have to barter for anything. The others can kill each other due to bartering but I won’t have to be there.

Smart! Be prepared as best you can. Any person executing a barter transaction would be foolish to not be accompanied by protection, no matter what the item. And do it at some distant location. There are so many factors to consider in doing such things. A sole survivor will likely not be a survivor long. Especially with bartering. The best prepared are organized as at least inconspicuous armed groups in an equally inconspicuous but well-protected area. There are real-life scenarios that Kartographer has linked to that bring it home.

When you know everybody within 200 miles of your house, know everything about them, are use to stocking up all your supplies due to availability & shipping problems; it makes it easier. The big thing is that there ain’t 200 people in my entire area, not 200 thousand; that is a big difference. The cold is hard on ya, minus 53 below right now, but I’m accustomed to feedin the wood stoves.

I guess it depends on the conditions and how desperate I am. But as posted on other threads if things are bad its sucicide to appear well stocked , well fed and trusting.

It is very easy to shoot a thousand rounds a week, especially when you live right next to the range.

I don’t shoot that much now, but my kids shoot too, so one person’s SHTF stockpile is another person’s fun weekend with the kids.

We had to decrease our shooting substantially over the last two years because of decreased ammo availability and increased price.

You have some great natural barriers, as well as knowledge of the area and it’s people. Only “undisciplined” fools would attempt taking you on. Isolation can be good and bad. Communications would be critical to know what is going on or possibly heading your way. Deet is your friend! ;-)

Shoot, I wish I read this thread last year. I bought a thousand rounds of 6.5x55. Thought it would be a good trade item.

We're white sprinkles in a chocolate city, it won't take much for us to realize that it's time to say goodbye. We believe the cities are where the worst of the problems will be concentrated - the best chance for survival is to get out.

No knockout game in your area? I think the time to bug out was when the agitator Obama was elected. He and Holder have done a good job at getting both sides agitated. Part of the Alinsky (or whatever it is) plan to bring down the nation.

They will confiscate everyone’s retirement savings which will prolong it a little while.

The trouble with that is that the market will just nosedive and they'll lose it anyway.
