Dumb article.
What the heck happened to Walter Williams? He used to be very smart.. and wise.
The rest of the article is fine, but the title and first paragraph are like Al Gore or Karl Rove wrote them.
I think what Williams is saying is, a smart politician tells voters what they want to hear and a dumb one doesn’t. There’s no relationship between actual intelligence and ability to do this, especially when an army of advisors is available to the candidate.
Put another way, America is getting the government it deserves.

“What the heck happened to Walter Williams?”
He makes perfect sense to me. Williams is not talking about the all too numerous truly dumb-dumb information deprived rat politicians like the Sheila Jackson Lees and Hank Johnsons.
He is talking about the smart-dumb politicians like Helms who knows that he isn’t dumb enough to vote against farm subsidies and the like.
Walter Williams realized that politicians have to be or act as ‘dumb’ as the people who elect them to stay in power.
