I worked in an industry where about 50% of the men were gay. Few were in a ‘committed’ relationship and their goal was to get as much as they could, any way, anywhere and anyhow. One, who claimed he was ‘married’, back in the 1990’s to his partner, would bring in many other men for them both to enjoy on an average weekend.
One favorite game I heard of was to convince a straight married man to try it out with them. On many occasions I have had the misfortune to hear them make an outright play for a happily married man.
I see nothing normal in their world. For them to be able to be ‘married’ trivializes the love between a man and woman as God intended.
When I was a student at UC Davis, some lesbian wrote a heartfelt letter to the editor about how she feels she deserves the right to marry her girlfriend.
Her family does not see her as normal, she explained. But if she could marry her girlfriend, her family would realize that she is just as normal as everyone else.
Nowhere in her letter did she speak of love and commitment. It was all about trying to appear normal in the eyes of her family. As I see it, she was engaged in a fair amount of self-delusion. Did she really think her family would suddenly decide her mental illness is normal, just because she gets legal permission to pretend to marry with a license and everything? Did it really never occur to her that her family thought she was abnormal because of her behavior, which has nothing to do with whether she possesses a specific legal document?
