At midnight Monday, the official deadline arrives for Americans to sign up through the new federal health insurance exchange for health plans that begin Jan. 1. But, without any public announcement, Obama administration officials have changed the rules so that people will have an extra day to enroll, according to two individuals with knowledge of the switch.
Over the weekend, government officials and outside IT contractors working on the online marketplace’s computer system made a software change that automatically gives people a Jan. 1 start date for their new coverage as long as they enroll by 11:59 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
The switch is the most recent rule change — some by government officials, and at least one by the insurance industry — as a milestone approaches for what has been a tumultuous three-month start of the long-awaited opportunity for Americans to buy new health plans under a 2010 law intended to reshape the nation’s health-care system.
For the first two months of the sign-up, a federal Web site, HealthCare.gov, had so many software and hardware defects that many consumers who wanted to select new insurance were frustrated by computer error messages. And administration officials held off on a planned campaign to urge people to take advantage of the opportunity for new insurance.
At the start of this month, Obama administration officials announced that the Web site was largely working smoothly, and began to urge consumers to sign up for coverage before the Dec. 23 deadline. The full open-enrollment period extends through the end of March, but the first deadline is for people who want coverage to start on New Year’s Day — the date it first becomes available.

Trying to use the web site is like trying to shovel horse manure back against a rising tide. Sooner or later you give up and go sit on the boardwalk. Less smelly back there.

You raise some good points but the next generations perhaps can regard it as payback for the years of education and infrastructure that they received. We've stuck them with the cost of wars too. But I think generational wars are out of place in this country, they are not family friendly. Regards,

The next generation and those beyond will curse us for what we have left them as their patrimony. We have eaten all the seed corn, undermined the Constitution, and saddled them with the welfare state that will lead them into penury.

It is our generation that has declared war on the young and future generations. We have already seen a massive redistribution of wealth from the young to the old. And the debt that has been incurred will guarantee a decline in the standard of living. By 2030 there will be just two workers for every retiree.
Frankly, I wish there was a generational war. The young have just accepted our generation theft without fighting back. It is like taking candy from a baby.
Nah. There will still be 10 only 8 are in other countries in all the jobs for the young that we have exported. [check what you buy] These foreign employees nor their employer pay into the system. The system was designed for working Americans to support retired Americans, in turn. No wonder it is going broke. Job tariff should be installed. No free ride for imports.
These kind of "systems" are called Ponzi schemes.

My understanding is that even with the abyssmally low number of people signing up on the 0dumb0_Care gubmint exchange, the real story is that virtually no one has paid even their first premium so far. So some of the sheeple have signed up, but so far, no paid premiums which is the real test of seeing this debacle have even a ghost of a chance to succeed. I hope & pray that 0dumb0_Care will be the greatest act of non-compliance & insurrection this country has ever seen.

I read an article on yahoo that most people don’t understand obamacare and many of them don’t even understand insurance.
The lefties believed their followers would sign up because the great obama told them to.
Is that the 15th or 16th time this law was changed by the White House without Congressional action?
No, they manufacture them in public school. Never a shortage.

The article mentioned a "frantic" guy who was anxious to sign up because he needed a liver transplant and had a doctors' appointment already scheduled in January. Get too many of that type of sign ups and insurance companies will go broke before the year is up! Could just all be part of the plan, though.
