House Budget Committee chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) has doubled down on his move to cut pensions for military veterans in a USA Today op-ed published Sunday.
In the op-ed, Ryan opens up by highlighting the CBO estimate that the deal he cut with Senate Budget Committee chairwoman Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) would result in at least $20 billion in deficit reduction. The Bipartisan Budget Act that Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and I drafted will soon become law, Ryan wrote. We think it's a small step toward fiscal discipline in Washington. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill will reduce the deficit over the next ten years by over $20 billion. And unlike current law, it will provide much-needed relief to our already strained defense budget.
As Breitbart News has reported, Ryans and Murrays budget deal does not reduce the deficit. In fact, the deal raises the deficit by at least $15.5 billion because of a series of gimmicks that Ryan and Murray employed in the accounting of the deal -- namely, double counting of savings like the tactic which was employed in Obamacare, and the failure to include an estimate of the interest on the borrowed money for the first couple of years of increased spending. These are only a few among a series of other misleading statements Ryan has made about the deal.
The rest of Ryans op-ed is devoted to defending his decision to cut $6 billion worth of military pensions. "One part of the bill has become particularly controversial: the reduction in cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for working-age military retirees, Ryan wrote. The federal government has no greater obligation than to keep the American people safe and we must take care of the

>> To hold the line is BS?
Damn straight it’s BS. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives has the ONLY key to the treasury, but not the character or cajones to keep the damn thing locked until they extract MEANINGFUL cuts from the Marxists.
No guts, no skill, no ideals, no leadership, no morals, no character.
Nothing but a burning ambition to get elected every two years until they retire, having milked my beloved country dry.
And therefore, they get no applause, at least not from me. I can think and use my eyes, and I HAVE ideals and principles.
Boner, Ryan and the rest of the (R) party have totally abandoned me. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, they can all die and rot above ground. The ants and buzzards can have their stinking corpses.
“At the risk of drawing firewhy are cuts to veteran COLAs so offensive?”
Maybe it is because military retirement was pre-paid. Each year, the DoD sets aside the amount it needs to cover future retirements. That trust fund had been well managed, and is in the black and is not expected to ever go in the red.
However, by cutting the retirement, Congress can declare the trust fund overfunded, and withdraw money already paid and set aside to cover retirement costs, and sink it in to current expenses such as Obamaphones and tax refunds of people here illegally and who did not pay any taxes.
THAT is a big part of the outrage.
This is embezzling by Congres so it can shovel more money to public school administrators, pork projects, illegals, the EPA - you name it.
“We arent necessarily talking about people who lost a limb fighting in battle. “
I think I’ll add my last combat deployment was when I was 49. No, I did not lose a limb. I did, however, spend roughly 6 months of each year deployed to places like Saudi Arabia, sleeping in tents at PSAB and patrolling the no-fly zone, where they did shoot at us thru the 90s. My oldest daughter was excited on her 12th birthday, because it was the first time I was home during her birthday. 12!
How many “police, fire fighters, and teachers” live like that?
This theft has little personal impact on me. By the time it takes effect, I’ll be 57 or 58 and it just won’t mean much to MY bottom line. But I DO view it as a betrayal of all in the military. It allows Congress to pull $600 million - that is MILLION as in Mary - out of the trust fund each year and spend it on the Department of Education, or tax welfare for illegals.
$600 million from veterans to fund $4,200 million for illegals. Our pensions will cover about 7.5 weeks of tax benefits for illegals. That doesn’t strike you as a poor choice?
Nice plan NOT.
Or we can just go bankrupt due to these bastards’ non-stop profligacy and let military funding go down the tubes THAT way. China will step in and pick up the pieces, since they will own us. Not a shot fired.
That’s your preference?
I am tired of gimmicks and double dealing crooked politicians.
To think you will get larger cuts with Reid in charge is a utopian pipe dream.
First off, it’s Christmas Eve... and with that let me wish you a very Merry Christmas! I’m off to do some last minute shopping, as men are wont to do. Buying my brother a couple of AMERICAN made truck tires.
Not that I’m prescient, but some time ago I recognized that taboos were falling at a pace that had an exponential factor. I described this verbally to a friend. Imagine holding a stack of paper in your hand. You are in a car with the window down, and you stick your hands out clasping a stack of papers... say 3-4 inches in thickness. The vehicle that you are riding in is traveling about 70 mph. You start to release pressure on the ream of paper. A few pages fly off. BOOM. No dress code in schools. As you continue to release pressure, more and more pages fly off. BOOM. Abortion on demand. At some point, the pages are disappearing at such an accelerated rate that in mere seconds they will all be gone. BOOM. Queer Nation is a popular television program, or at the very least, a rallying cry. Our mores, values, traditions, customs, etc. are those pages and we are in some definable range of those pages... maybe the last inch or so. BOOM. Lee and Jackson. Two more pages off of the stack. Poof. Gone. Took an instant at most, and here we are. Our founders warned us. The behavior of the citizens of Rome, foretold what would happen if we lost our moral compass.
OK my fine feathered freeper friend, I’m off to enjoin the masses in crass commercialism. Keep your powder dry, and as one wise freeper (squantos???) says... have a plan to kill everyone you meet.
