The family fighting to keep a brain-dead 13-year-old girl on medical support through Christmas blasted administrators at Children's Hospital Oakland on Thursday evening, saying that hospital officials told them in a private meeting that the girl had to be taken off her ventilator "quickly."
"They said, 'What don't you understand?' She is dead, dead, dead,'" said Omari Sealey, the uncle of Jahi McMath, the Oakland teen who has been kept alive by machines since complications from a tonsil surgery last week in a case that has brought national attention and prayers from social media users around the world. "They just kept referring to her as 'a body.'"
The family's attorney, Christopher Dolan, said he will head to court on Friday morning to seek an injunction to halt any hospital intervention. Hospital officials have not given a timeline to remove the girl from the ventilator, he added

"They keep saying she is 'dead, dead, dead' and I am hoping the courts will say 'no, no, no,'" Dolan said in a Thursday night news conference. "We just saw her; she is a beautiful young lady. She responds to her mother's touch. She is warm."

Jahi had tonsil surgery to help her with sleep apnea, weight gain and other health problems and began bleeding from her nose and mouth and experienced cardiac arrest later that night.

Presumably. This is a brain death situation, not a chronic vegetative state. In all USA States, brain death is death, and there is no point in continuing the ventilator supports
Plus. how do you know this information?
Affirmative action involved?!.....ultimate irony if it is....
Back in the 90's we had "going postal." Wait till the ACA sets in for realsies and people start going "medical."
I think that is probably excessive. My works for a hospital. They don’t cover this stuff up. The reporting and investigation is far beyond what any police department would do.
I can appreciate them wanting to wait until after Christmas. But autonomous nervous reactions (to touch, sound, etc) are not signs of life. This little girl is not going to wake up.
I pray for the family and the surgeons and the staff. They are not cold machines. They feel these accidental deaths more than you can imagine—and not just because of the legal impact.
I’ll wager a whole lot that several lawyers have found them and that some of them are good and most of them are greedy.
I’ll also bet the whole farm that none of them can bring her back.
I read that she had rapid blood lost through her mouth and nose after surgery.
You are not hearing the entire story.
This sounds like the family has been spoken to several times and they keep holding out for a miracle that isn’t going to happen.
I know of a catholic hospital and they have specially trained sisters/Drs to deal with these kinds of families. It happens all of the time..most families in this situation end up “getting it”. Some do not, and it gets very “icky”—and the families need to hear the truth, harshly, and directly.
I know it sounds cold. But the process needs to conclude. No need to rush it through Christmas—but I guarantee you that you are not hearing the full story. HPPA will not allow you to ever hear the rest of the story.
I am not letting them off the hook for malpractice. But this harshness you are reading is not the full story.
I find it completely unbelievable that they are still doing tonsillectomies!
It has been known to be without legitimate purpose for half a century. Ruthless murderers.
.
Coincidentally, I saw a local news report on this right before reading this thread.
Hospital said she was brain dead. That the family doesn’t understand that when the brain stops functioning, it doesn’t come back. That’s what they said.
I saw a photo of the 13 year old girl. She was quite obese and looked much much older than 13.
I figure there were underlying health problems associated with the initial sleep apnea they were trying to treat and with the reaction to the surgery which was not good.
While that's distinctly possible it's by no means certain. There's no such thing as a medical or surgical treatment or procedure that's completely safe 100% of the time. And that's true even at the finest hospitals in the world.
Now they are trying to euthanize her to cover it up. Welcome to ACA.
Although I'm not familiar with every single line of the OsamaObamaCare bill my 20 years experience at a major Harvard teaching hospital suggests to me that they're more likely to be trying to avoid a long, drawn out court battle that could cost them millions in uncompensated care than it is that they're trying to cover something up.The hospital and the physicians/surgeons involved in this kid's care are gonna be sued bigtime regardless of how long the kid's on a respirator.
I’d have broken that doctor’s neck, neck, neck.
yep, they want the organs.
Some days I read thing on FR that make me wonder who left the back door to Hell open. Your comment is one.
not illegal.
just not required.
she had sleep apnea...at that age she was probably profoundly overweight and has done a great deal of damage to her heart already....
thru the best practice of any doctor or hospital, not every one is going to make it....
its ultimately up to the family to decide....
I had the same complications during a tonsillectomy back in 1959. Doctors couldn’t stop the bleeding. 8 hours in surgery. Any operation is risky.
Bless this little girl and her family.
what hospital “error” paralyzied you?....
there are cases of people coming back that have had no recorded brain function.
we just learned recently that people can appear to be out under gas, yet they really are conscious ut can’t move, and they feel pain of the operation they’re having done.
don’t say it can’t occur. it has occurred.
