A nuclear aircraft carrier would have radiation detection equipment. I can’t imagine the captain didn’t deploy it and get a running report on conditions. So, it would be the US Navy that didn’t inform the crew.

It certainly was the responsibility of the US navy to do its own monitoring wherever we sent our soldiers.
