I dropped cable eight years ago due to the high prices and the continuing price increases. Used a cheap antenna with my analog TV which I kept on the kitchen counter because it was the only place I could pull in reception.

When the HDTV's came out, bought an antenna with a hundred mile range at Best Buy to go with a 19 inch HDTV screen. Antenna looks like a closed laptop and all you need is two wall plugs to plug in the antenna and the TV to the wall and a line to hook antenna to TV. I put the antenna on my window sill to pull in the best reception. Get 19 channels. I run a scan every so often to pick up any new channels.
