A more accurate assessment would be to include the numbers at the END of WWII, and the levels in 1955.

If you think the numbers as of the end of World War II should be the norm for a peace time army, then we probably don’t have any common ground for discussion. And if you argue that we aren’t at peace, then I’d say take away the toys from the Bush/Obama crowd, and they’d have to find another outlet.
