We don’t need to compete. If you want restrictions on imports from unfree or hostile countries that is one thing, but a blanket tariff is nothing but a general tax hike.

Well China is clearly hostile and they have done the most to undermine our industries, so start with them.

But you'll quickly have chinese goods being shipped to us through other countries and it will be hard to determine the true country of origin.

Plus having had a taste of cheap labor from off-shoring, firms will simply move to other third world countries not considered hostile.

Import tariffs were good enough for our founding fathers. And served this country well for it's first 190 years.

Lower income and corporate taxes by the amount raised by the tariffs and it won't be a tax hike at all.
