Teen pot use could hurt brain and memory, new research suggests
NBC News ^ | December 16, 2013 | Brian Alexander

Teenage pot smokers could be damaging brain structures critical to memory and reasoning, according to new research that found changes in the brains of heavy users.

Research released Monday in the journal Schizophrenia Bulletin showed the brains of young heavy marijuana users were altered in so-called sub-cortical regions — primitive structures that are part of the memory and reasoning circuits. And young people with such alterations performed worse on memory tests than non-using controls, despite the fact that the heavy users had not indulged for more than two years, on average, before the testing.

When the groups were given four tests of working memory, like remembering sequences of numbers they’d seen, heavy users, with or without schizophrenia, performed worse than healthy controls and non-using schizophrenics.

“We saw poor performance in the marijuana groups…” Smith explained. “And the younger somebody started using, the more abnormal they looked.”

No reasoning, mmmmm sounds like everyone in Washington, if they were honest you would find the majority of them were not light users of the drug.

. . . hurt brain and memory . . . ?

Sounds like the perfect drug to turn otherwise normal and intelligent people into liberals.

Yes, and not just this one. That’s the biggest problem with mood-altering drugs. People who use them are able to avoid facing and coping with reality.

“Those that smoke weed generally vigorously deny this.”

Because it’s simply not true.

I bring this out in my Psych classes, also the growing connection between pot use on the still developing teen brain (and other legal drugs) and the later development of mental illness especially schizophrenia.

Not much debate about it in my AP Psych class but in general psych there is always at least 1 defender of pot.

The head of Student Health Services at UC Berkeley came to this same conclusion in 1963 — just from observation.

Everything I’ve observed around me in the intervening years has backed that conclusion.

The defenders always compare pot use to alcohol abuse. Both do great harm. Funny how they rationalize that away.

“Sounds like the perfect drug to turn otherwise normal and intelligent people into liberals.”

You will find amongst cannabis users both the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the talented and intelligent as well as the ignorant unwashed masses.

Likewise, you will find people of all sides of the politicial spectrum who smoke pot. I think that most conservatives tend to be quieter about their pot use than liberals are, as a general rule.

I find it interesting that you can go to the store and buy a pack of cigarettes once you are 18, yet it has been proven beyond any reasonable measure that cigarettes have a _provable_ correlation to cancer, but you can’t buy cannabis, which does not have a proven correlation.

There is a difference between research suggesting something, and research proving something.

MJ causes memory loss and psychosis - the severity depends on the person. Those that smoke weed generally vigorously deny this.....

.....when they remember the question, that is.

“We have all seen pot smoking burn outs.”

There are pot smoking burn outs. I also know many pot smokers who have achieved remarkable things with their careers. You can’t really say that everyone who smokes cannabis turns into a burn out any more than you can say “anyone who drinks beer beats their wife.”

“That’s just nasty.”

Truth to tell, I find everything about Miley Cirus in that photo to be extremely repellent. I think I’d rather spend time with him, perhaps playing checkers.

Excellent point, although I disagree with you on pot doing damage to people’s lives in the manner that alcohol does.
