That still happens in parts of NJ. My brother lives in Hoboken. A few years back, cars began disappearing from the streets in his neighborhood - his car included. This area happens to be home to some families who do well in the refuse and cement industries. One day, the thefts stopped. They found my brother's car in a Newark chop shop. They found the bodies of the perps (2 blacks from Newark) floating in the Passaic River. The idiots picked the wrong neighborhood. Wish that kind of justice was more common.

Back when people knew they would be punished for their crimes either by the state or the victims’ families; there was little crime. One could leave their house unlocked or their car running while they ran into the cleaners.
