Conservatives who fear an Article V convention process ought to consider their objections, usually rooted in the fear of a runaway convention, in the context of speaker Boehner's remarks. Do we really believe that a majority of Republicans in the United States Senate will change the mentality of John Boehner? Do we really believe that obtaining an even more unrealistic goal of a filibuster proof majority in the Senate or a veto proof majority in the Senate will change the mentality of the men who are running the House of Representatives and who would be running the United States Senate?

Mark Levin's arguments in favor of and Article V convention are grounded in the idea that we have a runaway convention operating at the controls now and it's called the United States Congress and the administration of Barack Obama. The operation of the federal government today bears no moral relationship to the Constitution as written and formally amended. Worse, the day-to-day operation of the Obama administration bears no relationship to a government that bears no relationship to the Constitution.

We are already living in a runaway convention situation.

Similarly, just as we cannot hope for rescue from the likes of the Republican establishment, so we cannot hope to be rescued by the judicial branch. We saw that when Chief Justice John Roberts bitch slapped us with is opinion in Obamacare and we have seen it repeatedly in the decades since Roosevelt's court packing scheme.

If we do nothing events will take their course and the country will experience a calamity, probably a fiscal calamity, but probably also a calamity of liberty and, ultimately, a breakdown of morality and social order. Against these calamities we must balance the risk of a runaway convention.

Those risks are greatly mitigated by Republican control of the state legislatures. It is not the Congress which is part of the federal branch but the state legislatures which will have the most influence over the conduct of the convention. While it is true that the Constitution is silent on how these constitutional conventions would be conducted and financed, nevertheless, there is historical data suggesting that the states would exercise control. This is, after all, essentially a fight by the people in the states against establishment in Washington. That is why it is unrealistic to expect Washington to reform itself and why it is realistic to believe that the states will not permit Washington to runaway with the convention.

Finally, the math works in our favor rendering it very unlikely that liberal amendments would get past conservative Republican state legislatures.

We have Boehner and McConnell, and we had Republican control of both branches of Congress and the White House during the Bush years. That is what the Republican establishment wants to see restored. Is there anything in reason that suggests that if Republican control of all three branches of the government is restored, that we will not have a repeat of the fiscal irresponsibility of the Bush years? Is there anything to suggest that we will have better control of the borders than we got from Bush? Is there any reason to believe that we will have better control over renegade agencies such as the State Department and the CIA as we had under Bush? Will the leftists infiltration of the entire federal bureaucracy be undone? Will we get any better judges than we got in the likes of John Roberts?

If the answer to these questions and many others is "no" then the sole remaining option is to be found in Article V.
