iirc Obama was planning on normalizing Cuban relations in his first term when the Cubans went and killed some activist, the resulting bad press made him back off. I’m not sure of the details, but this is FR, someone will chime in I’m sure.

Hello, casinos - just like the old days!
I read about this yesterday. The negotiations have not included the White House. They were with lobby groups that have been trying to push for normalized relations with Cuba. They have worked with Cuba on things like search and rescue, nothing really diplomatic.
These stories are both cover-ups and wishful thinking on the part of these lobby groups. I just don’t believe that the hand shake was planned. I believe that Obama was just so full of himself that day that he was shaking everyone’s hand. He was acting like a rock star, greeting fans.
I have no doubt that the two countries can get together and work towards a common goal — COMMUNISM !!!
