Revelation: Colin Powell, George W. Bush's secretary of state, has confirmed the suspicion that derailed his plan to run for president: He's not just a liberal, but a socialist.
It's been a long time ago now, but Powell was once the dream Republican presidential candidate for a lot of pundits, campaign experts and ordinary Americans who appreciated his outstanding military service and pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps success story.
Now we find that Powell is with the extreme left of the Democratic Party on health care, supporting European-style single-payer socialized medicine.
"I don't see why we can't do what Europe is doing, what Canada is doing, what Korea is doing, what all these other places are doing," Powell said at a Prostate Cancer Survivors Celebration Breakfast in Washington state last week.
"I think universal health care is one of the things we should really be focused on, and I hope that will happen," Powell added.
"Whether it's ObamaCare, or son of ObamaCare, I don't care. As long as we get it done."
Twenty years ago, after his role in the successful Persian Gulf War as chairman of the Joint Chiefs, an Atlantic article titled "President Powell?" noted polling that found his favorability to be "an almost unheard-of 64%," with his unfavorable rating at a microscopic 6%.
His biography is a modern-day fairy tale.

An affirmative action military brass hat. That’s all he is and ever was.
Bonehead, McConnell and others would still say he is a dream President
Exactly.
Powell could still run for the White House. As a Democrat, or a Green Party candidate, or a Socialist Party candidate, or as the Worker’s World Party candidate, or as the Socialist Workers’ Party candidate, or as the Communist Party USA’s candidate (Barry got their applause last time).
Even the Libertarian Party is taking Socialists now.
So many options.
More like a garden variety attention ho’. He is trying to be relevant now and instead making a fool of himself.
I still blame this sissy boy for our having to go back to Iraq. Had he let us finish up Desert Storm, Iraq would have been just a memory. Powell can KMA.
As we've learned of Barack Obama's ghost written (auto)biography, it may very well BE a fairy tale.
There was a time when flag officers could be relied upon to be patriots, strict adherents to the constitution. Powell should be a lesson....the Pentagon is full of these guys now...the perfumed princes of the Pentagon.
I loved the way they satirized him in “Mars Attacks.” Hit the nail right on the head.
Bammy Light.
Colin Powell....MIND SLUT
Let's say you suddenly become famous for some reason. Maybe you've gotten rich, or you're really cute, or you've slept with some one rich, or you're racial characteristics have suddenly become interesting to the news media... it could be for all kinds of reasons.
The fickle eye of the information age turns your way, all of a sudden you've got your fifteen minutes of fame! But except for your freak talent, you're just an ordinary schlub! You don't have anything profound to say! You're all dressed up, but your brain doesn't have anywhere to go! What to do?
I'll tell you what to do, and it's really easy. Just bone up on a few left-wing talking points, and spout them every chance you get! With any luck, you can stretch your fifteen minutes to fifteen years! Everybody's doing it!
Powell was more than an ‘Affirmative Action’ general such as that bone head three star Honore that Bush sent to Louisiana for colorful optics in the wake of Katrina. (Russell Honore is just flat stupid, I have dealt with him after Katrina and know.) Powell has had powerful sponsors from far back in his career. He was the deputy division G-3 (Ops) with the Americals at the time of My Lai. No way he did not know all the details and was not involved in the coverup. Almost alone of senior responsible officers he was not cited with ‘negligence’ or something worse by the Peers Commission. Powell had powerful sponsors somewhere, probably both in the Army and on K Street. He was, I think, a former White House Fellow, which is truly uber establishment talent spotting. His whole career was inside the Beltway , with required command tours to get the right punches on his ticket. I am sure his mind is classic inside the Beltway statist, big government, administrative state. That is what DC is like from lower mid level bureaucrats up to the top of the pyramid.
**sigh**
I’ve never liked him.
“Pulled himself” up from his affirmative action bootstraps. He was probably lifted from above (in the chain of command) and carried from below by subordinates.
I was always suspicious of him, even before he left Libby hanging in the wind.
