TOKYO: Japan's royal couple left Tokyo for India on Saturday, starting the first-ever official visit there by a Japanese emperor.
The trip is the first by any Japanese emperor to India although Akihito, 79, visited there in the early 1960s when he was crown prince.
Japan's emperor is the nominal head of state and does not enjoy political powers. But customarily, the emperor's visit to any country is highly significant and signals a peak in bilateral ties.

Hmmmm...me thinks you might be right.
“Hmmmm... Just a coincidence, or a growing alignment as a response to a common threat??”
Look for an alliance involving Israel, India, Korea, Taiwan and Japan. Israel will probably deploy nuclear weapons for them.
“...response to a common threat...”
Bingo; we have a winner!
Nothing nominal about it. He's just as much head of state as Queen Elizabeth.
India already has nukes. The others could develop them very quickly whenever they decide to. Though I would hope Taiwan would not be so foolish as to do so. Poking the tiger in the eye and all that.
Another article mentioned that this is only the fifth time that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has personally received a visiting leader at the airport in the last ten years as prime minister. Two of the receptions were for U.S. presidents Bush and Obama, once for the Saudi King, and then another time for an important neighbor, Nepal.
The Empress’s outfit is very tasteful.
They’re both elegantly dressed. Tradition is very important in Japan.
Without being up close, I can’t tell if a gentleman’s suit is extra-classy or just pretty nice ;-), but I suspect Emperor Akihito is in the height of conservative style for his age and social class.
I’d be willing to guess that his suit cost a small fortune. :)
Philippines included? Possibly even Vietnam? and Singapore?
“Philippines included? Possibly even Vietnam? and Singapore?”
I don’t think they’d bring much to the party. I was reluctant to include Korea as they have a huge cultural issue with Japan. The party they won’t include is the US.
India has been building relationships with the Philippines and Vietnam (especially Vietnam). Singapore has some military ties with India. Singapore air force and army do some of their training in India. India allows them to keep a training base there, due to the limited space in Singapore. Singapore is the only country allowed to operate such a military facility in India.

IMO, right now major players in counter-Chinese alliance are Russia, India, Vietnam and Japan. Russia is a brain of the scheme covertly leading from behind, India is a nerve and Vietnam is a claw. Japan is yet to define it’s role as it is new to this game. SoKo and Philippines aren’t yet in game, but their interests are close to Japan’s.
Needless to say that US is not a part of any alliance like that and does anything to help China, mostly in Central Asia.
