Whats missing or at least not clear is “situational awareness.” People in bad areas used to keep their backs to a wall, know who was around them, where potential threats were at, listen for activity, etc., as part of everyday life.
Never, ever keep your back to the wall on urban streets. That’s where it’s very dark and where the pervs lurk. Get closer to street traffic. In the 70s, I would think to myself: better to die by getting hit by a car than getting dragged into a dark stairwell.
Of course, I realize you were not using “back to the wall” literally.
Situational Awareness is key.
Was in the 5 Points Marta Station recently. Saw a group of yutes. Changed my walking vector to create larger berth. All the while, I was scanning for other problems.
Completely agree, re: personal safety.
There also needs to be some "fighting back"...maybe not literally from 73-year-old Grandmas (although anyone who tangled with my 73-year-old cousin would rue the day, lol)...but also via law enforcement and punishment. Awareness is crucial both for self-protection, and reporting suspicious evidence/incidents to police...

That should be a part of our everyday lives, regardless of where we are.
