In 1817, at age 47, Lou Beethoven started two of his greatest works, and they gestated together for a period of almost two years. One was the Ninth Symphony. The other was the Piano Sonata in B-flat, Op. 106, the Hammerklavier Sonata. This was a 1200 bar behemoth whose slow movement is the longest in Beethoven’s output. The finale is a fugue in three voices that uses every technique Lou picked up from the study of Bach and Handel. This was to become Beethoven’s personal favorite among his sonatas.

Beethoven told his publisher that this piece would keep pianists busy for the next fifty years. Lou was underestimating. In difficulty, there is nothing like it for its era. Almost a century later, the young Arthur Rubinstein was defeated by this piece until he buckled down and spent an entire year doing nothing but mastering it.

I wrote pages and pages of commentary before I stopped and found a professional to explain the piece for you.

Andras Schiff dissects the Hammerklavier Sonata in 82 minutes with great humor

Here’s Daniel Barenboim from his Berlin series playing the sonata.
