I recall that JPII was not any more economic libertarian (small ‘l’) than Pope Francis, which was even more disappointing, considering his background. It seems that the Popes are not well informed in the area of economics, or else drift toward the impractical utopian visions of modern day socialists. Calling for alleviation of poverty is not the same as setting government policies.

I mean, let the Pope visit Silicon Valley or the special economic zones of China to discover what those free market areas have done for the poor.

Silicon Valley is populated by well-to-do (and liberal) millienials and hipsters. As for the special economic zones of China, I assume you’re talking about establishments like Foxconn, where conditions are so bad that workers are jumping out of windows.

I think it’s difficult for those not participating in capitalism to appreciate its value. We don’t hear sermons that speak to the value of free markets, jobs, and opportunity. The terms required for this insight are simply not part of the lexicon.
