I don't think the Pope's remarks echoed Marxism so much as Peronism. Is that a distinction with a meaningful difference?

Yes, at least in the mind of Peron, who always denied he was a communist. In fact, he claimed that communism (and even socialism) was like vinegar, a condiment. In small doses vinegar enhances the favor of a salad but too much ruins the taste, and no one can drink vinegar straight. Of course, this claim came late in Peron’s life after the center of politics had shifted radically leftward.
