Airlines will have to warn China of their flight plans before entering airspace in the East China Sea, aviation officials have said, after it declared the creation of an "air defence zone" over islands that are also claimed by Japan.

So who will shoot down
the first civilian airliner this year?
China? or al Qaeda with Clinton/Obama MANPADs?
Wow, on Maps Google, these islands are right up against the larger island of Japon. Korea looks like the closet neighbor. WHY would China think that these islands belong to them......
Maybe those flights should be accompanied by F15’s
Maybe it’s time for Japan to make up some thermonuclear warheads and fit them to missiles. .... Should take them about a week...
Guess they are getting lessons from the soviets when they shot down the Korean Air 747.
Because they think they can get away with claiming them.
Like Hitler and...
They probably think everything in the south Pacific "belongs" to them, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand.
They're just testing the waters on this small amount of real estate now because they think they will be allowed to get away with it. By the current occupant of the White House, who obviously believes that the United States should no longer be "the world's policeman."
Instead, he thinks the world should be our policeman.
One word -— ENERGY.
Maps and texts from both [the two Chinese governments in Taipei and Beijing] during the period between 1895, when Japan seized the [Senkaku] islands, and 1971, when the claim was first mentioned, have three things in common:
(1) they always assign their sovereignty to Japan;
(2) they refer to them using the Japanese names; and
(3) they never refer to the disputed status of the islands.
Simply put, there was no “dispute” over the Senkaku until after scientists raised the possibility of oil in the area in the late 1960s.
People will go to war to control energy.
Ironically, we here in the USA REFUSE to tap what we have... Go Figure.
But, hey, lets do more Free Trade with Communist China...that will work.

Southwest Cay was once controlled by the Philippines but one night all the troops left to attend a birthday party and south Vietnam invaded and took it.
Some of the PRC controlled islands now have been built up, one (Mischief Cay) sports 13 multi-story buildings
You have to follow the Communist logic to its beginning.
did a blind 4 year old make that map?
technically speaking, Taiwan also believes it owns Red China.... good luck to them with that repo
According to the Great Circle mapping, from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Hong Kong flies over the Chinese mainland but not near the area of the disputed islands. This means the new defensive zone may not affect flights of United Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways between San Francisco/Los Angeles and Hong Kong.
Why? because there is lots of oil there.
Cunundrum:
The islands are believed Japanese sovereign
Announcing to China you are overflying begins giving them de facto territory.
On the one hand I wouldn’t want to be shot down on the other “they can stuff it”.
