Ex-Mayor David Dinkins today advised his former aide, Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio, to consider pushing to renew the commuter tax instead of his signature campaign plan to boost taxes on the rich to fund universal pre-K, arguing the former would be more palatable to Albany lawmakers.
Mr. de Blasio had just finished a sweeping speech to experts and advocates at Columbia University touting his early childhood education planhis first major address since his electionwhen a moderator turned to Mr. Dinkins, who was in attendance, to ask a question.
I know how difficult its going to be to fight Albany to get a tax on the wealthy folks to solve this problem. But I have a suggestion that I would offer for your consideration, began Mr. Dinkins, whose head was projected behind Mr. de Blasio on a screen.
He then floated the idea of bringing back the tax, which would apply to people who work in the city, but reside elsewhere. See whether or not this might be more easily done than putting a tax on the wealthy to take care of the rest of us, he suggested. I think we might have more success with the other.

Maybe he could school him on crime control too.
Face plant.
Commuter taxes. What a great plan -—rip off the people who come to the city to work.
“a tax on the wealthy to take care of the rest of us’
From each according tho their abilities. To each according to their needs.
(sarcasm? De-blowsio believes in it.)
Otherwise known as the Connecticut and New Jersey stimulus plan. Great idea, provide an incentive not to come into the city.
Commie ‘RAT politicians stealing money from those who work for a living for “universal Pre-K”. They’re doing it for “the churldren”. Isn’t that special.
re: Commuter tax: “No taxation without representation!”
just add it to the bridge and tunnel tax, right??? wait, that's only you come in from the west, now they gotta back up Long Island on the way in too
Yes. A ridiculous idea. But these socialists truly believe in what they do. This is why the 10-15% of NYC that is still conservative needs to leave, and the 30-40% of the Tri-State area that is conservative and commutes into NYC needs to start looking for a job elsewhere.
And how NOT to pay his income taxes????????????????????????
New York State started bleeding corporate headquarters to Stamford, CT, and New Jersey when they insisted on bigger and bigger commuter taxes. That’s why they finally agreed to drop it.
Things evened out because the tax burdens in CT and NJ are really just as bad, if not worse, than they are in NY. But if they try to throw a commuter tax on top of everything else, then they may just find more large corporate HQs moving South or into Flyover country.
“...may just find more large corporate HQs moving South or into Flyover country.”
Moving will probably cut costs by 50% at a minimum.
So refreshing to hear from a high representative of the gimme-gimme-gimme faction!
Maybe a tax on knockouts.
“A tax on the wealthy to take care of the rest of us”? Whatever happened to “pull your own weight”, “have some self respect and self worth”, “those who will not work shall not eat”. In David Dinkins’ worldview (and he left NYC a real mess after 4 years as mayor), these are apparently out the window and you and I and the guy behind the tree will work until we are 88 to pay for everyone who chooses not to (there aren’t enough “wealthy” to cushion the rest).
Even Mayor Bloomberg wasn't this stupid. The city of NY (about 8 million) has 50% of its budget underwritten by roughly 44,000+ taxpayers. When Gov. Patterson suggested a “tax the rick” scheme, Bloomberg raised hell and Patterson backed off.
The “commuter tax” scheme is going to drive people out of the city and it will not generate the revenues Dinkens and de Blasio think. OK, all you ignorant NYC Donkeys, this is the kind of brilliant thinking you get when you elect a card carrying Marxist as Mayor.
A commuter tax would violate the SCOTUS recognized right to travel.

The opportunity to move corporate headquarters out of the Northeast has always existed. However, the liberal senior executives of these corporations love the the lifestyle of the “city” and will not do what is in the economic interest of their shareholders by moving the headquarters to a lower cost location.
If New York City imposes a commuter tax, the guys at the top will adjust their salaries to cover the cost of the tax and continue to commute from Connecticut or New Jersey by limo. It will be the middle managers, riding the train, who actually pay the tax bill. Both Dinkins and DeBlasio know this. However they also know the commuters won’t be voting in the next election while they’ll be shaking down the executives for campaign money. Hence the call for a commuter tax instead of a substantial increase in marginal tax rates on the wealthy who live in Manhattan.
Very probably true. The elite cannot ever leave the “high life” in the urban ghettos.
