All common in rural areas but I guess you've never been in a rural area which explains why you didn't know that.

I lived in "deep country" in Texas neighbor state of Louisiana for a large chunk of my life, and "thieves and trespassers" were NOT "all common", and people walking along a rural road with a long gun WAS totally commonplace.
"Item B" was the reason for "Item A".
