They know this will come back to bite them in the future, but they are trading long term reward for short term success. With Obama’s ever dwindling popularity circling the drain and threatening to take his party with him, the last hope they have of enacting anything is in the next year.

I've felt for a long time that the Democrats are playing their end game. They are seeking to push the conservative opposition into permanent minority status. I believe they do not think they will lose the White House or Senate again and will keep chipping away at the House.
They are not trading anything. The Democrats will get their way now and when the roles are reversed in the future, they will get their media lapdogs to pressure the Republicans into caving. As always, it’s a pay me now and pay me later type of deal for the Democrats.
