It sounds like mechanical problems is a possibility since this happened on the second attempted landing.
I know back in the mid 70s their commercial planes were refurbished from WWII. Nothing worked on them and every screw was loose or long lost. If a plane crashed on the runway, they’d pull the burned out carcass off to the edge which didn’t do anything for passenger confidence. Runways were never repaired and had trees growing out of cracks. Little ancient grandmas would fill the tank by eye so it was always a gamble if you had enough fuel to get to the destination. I’m going to assume things have improved over the years.
