I regret any Schadenfreude aimed at New Yorkers. The ones who indeed deserve to suffer the ravages of this Sandinista mayor, the wealthy liberals, already lead protected lives insulated from the dangers that ordinary citizens face.

Still, I’m waiting for the first time someone asks me in clipped tones, “Excuse me, where does one have to go around here for a decent egg cream?”

Then I’ll know the exodus has begun.

I wasn’t implying that you had said anything untoward, just speaking generally. But I think the exodus has been going on for a long time now, at least since the murder of Genovese.

None of the witnesses observed the attacks in their entirety or saw the complete sequence. Most only heard portions of the incident without realizing its seriousness, and no witnesses directly saw the final rape and attack. But if true that the police were called after the first incident that a woman got “beat up and got up” and still didn’t arrive in time it could have been a breakdown with the NYPD’s inefficient telephone reporting system rather than the callousness of neighbors.

It’s hard to say. I lived in NYC only four years.

It was pretty safe in the daytime, I guess. Certainly not a slum. It didn’t have gangrene, like the Bronx.
