AUSTIN U.S. Sen. John Cornyn bedeviled by some in the tea party whod prefer him to be more Ted Cruz-like said Friday Republicans must prove they can govern like responsible adults and be a big-tent party welcoming a variety of people who share their principles.
What weve seen is that when were divided, we capitulate. We basically hand the victory to our political opponents. They win elections, and then they get to govern, and that leads us in disastrous directions like were seeing now, Cornyn told reporters.
Cornyn was joined by Gov. Rick Perry at a re-election rally at Scholz Garten before formally filing for re-election as senator.
We need to demonstrate that if the American people are willing to give us the opportunity in this next election to win that election, then we will be the responsible adults in the room. We will actually govern, Cornyn said.
Cruz hasnt endorsed Cornyn for re-election, saying he expects to stay out of incumbent primary elections overall. But Cornyns campaign has said Cruzs political action committee donated to Cornyns re-election.
Asked whether he believed Sen. Cruz who played a leading role in the government shutdown spurred by opposition to the federal health care law is acting like a responsible adult, Cornyn said, I think hes been a great new addition to the United States Senate. The sort of galvanizing attention he gave to the failures of Obamacare during his 21-hour speech I thought was very helpful. We had a minor disagreement over tactics, and that happens but we all live and learn.
Cornyn said he believes they share the goal of replacing Obamacare with something thats actually affordable and works.

Cornyn has to go.
What was the crap I heard him spout this AM?
I cant recall.
It was claptrap.
He has to go, but we need a replacement

Completely agree. John McCornyn only appeared to be a “conservative” when he was partnered with Kay Baily Hutchinson. The illusion has been stripped away.
He has to go.
There is some scuttlebutt that Rep. Louie Gohmert might jump into the fray. If he does I will back him, 100%.
I love Louie’s heart.
I just hope he has the educational chops.
He needn’t be a Harvard grad.
He just needs to stay Texas smart.
Go get em Louie.
Yeah, the pooch... doesn't fall far from the screw--
Someone needs to be the adult since they would be leading a bunch of liberal children.
Louie Gohmert isn’t “polished” like McCornyn is. He is as honest and sincere as Ted Cruz is, though.
I’ll that that over “polished” any day.
That, and Gohmert is a Vet. U.S. ARMY Captain.
Ted and Louie share the same heart.
Ted has the gift of tongue and high education.
Louie is a simple East Texas boy but his Momma did not raise no fool.
God bless them all.
Then he had better hurry. I thought I heard somewhere that the deadline for filing was rapidly approaching.
Setting the bar pretty low there aren't you?
“...and be a big-tent party welcoming a variety of people who share their principles.”
Nothing new here. It’s the standard Republican credo but notice the new definition of the “go along to get along” phrase......BIG-TENT.
Yeah, that’s the ticket. Be sure to bring in all of the right people to ensure defeat every time by bringing them into the BIG TENT.
