The Muslim percentage of the population of India is 13 or 14%. I think most of them are descended from the Muslims living in India at the time of partition in 1947. The most heavily Muslim areas became Pakistan but there were lots of Muslims living elsewhere. 12 million people became refugees in 1947--Hindus fleeing Pakistan and Muslims fleeing to Pakistan.

My late father had a very fine doctor who was from Pakistan, who unfortunately died before my father (so he had to find another doctor). I don't know if the man was still a Muslim but he was everything one could ask for in a doctor.
