Even before it emerged that the National Security Agency had wiretapped her mobile phone, German Chancellor Angela Merkel was calling for the Internet to have something like Airbusa joint European initiative able to compete with the dominance of American and Chinese high-tech companies, just as Airbus does with the US aerospace giant Boeing.
Currently, the global market for software and online services is firmly in American hands. Whats more, American corporations, such as Google, are subject to the PATRIOT Act, which requires them to allow American intelligence agencies access to their data centers.
On the other hand, the equipment that directs traffic on the Internet often comes from Chinafor example, routers made by Huawei. No one can be certain that there isnt spying technology built in there as well, warns Norbert Pohlmann, chair of the IT Security Association Germany (TeleTrust).
Deutsche Telekom wants to change this state of affairs by building a purely German Internet, with data packets only sent via German pathways if the sender and recipient are both within the country.

All good as long as the German Internet doesn’t start expanding into the Sudetenland, Poland, the low countries or France. We’ve seen this all before.
Dies ist eine wunderbare Idee.
I don’t know. Some of the very first spying software in our arsenal here was server soft from German company.
ANY government is a lugubrious herd of swine and better kept under lock and key, and whipped and waterboarded three times a day.
I would never dream of using google for anything!
The search engine I use it GoodSearch.com
I think it’s as good or better than google—and has the added benefit of letting choose a “charity” when you first sign on. Every time you use it, they donates a few pennies to your charity.
Second Amendment Sisters is the “charity” I listed.
Over the last couple of years, SAS has gotten a couple of checks from them—one of which was more than a hundred dollars.
You could choose FR as your “charity” and do a little fund raising for FR—or any other charity you would like to name.
GoodSearch has proved to be every good as google -— it’s never failed to produce results for anything I’ve typed in the search engine.
A factual statement.
Thank you.

Nut-job Conspiracy Theory Ping!
To get onto The Nut-job Conspiracy Theory Ping List you must threaten to report me to the Mods if I don't add you to the list...
Good luck w/that.
It’ll be a purely german internet until someones runs a cable to a router with other internet traffic.
Even if they somehow shun all other internet traffic in the country, separate-network security solutions usually don’t hold up very long.
The EU people in Brussels must be licking their chops at this new opportunity for suppression and control.
I don’t think that all of the damage reports are in yet on how much this will cost US-based tech firms, in loss of trust. Remember - wasn’t it just a few months ago when we were fretting about Chinese clone spy chips in routers and switches? That’s the least of our problems.
Yes; the Yanks are the bogeyman du jour once more. Not enough that it was “the CIA are trying to stop the EU” during the Lisbon Treaty re-vote in Ireland . . . (sad thing is, Obama deserves this in a number of ways)
Anschluss.com.
But that might be taken. So to speak.
How about anschluss.de?
If a tech can make it, a tech can hack it.
show us your papers please.....
That’s even better.
