BALTIMORE (WJZ) Deadly diseases, once nearly wiped out, are making a frightening comeback in Maryland and across the country. Now a warning that parents who dont vaccinate their children are putting others at risk.
Linh Bui explores an alarming and controversial trend.
Measles, mumps, whooping cough all deadly diseases. Until recently virtually eliminated thanks to vaccines that prevent kids from getting sick.
But now doctors see an alarming trend more and more people are coming down with these diseases.
Kids die from measles on a regular basis. Kids are in hospitals and can die from whooping cough very commonly. So these kids are at risk, said Dr. Scott Krugman, Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center.

“There were things we could not do because my parents feared we would catch it, things like movies and swimming pools.”
I never heard that before, thanks!
I personally think the basic vaccines I got in the mid 60s are probably all a person should be required to get. Measles, Mumps, Rubella. (I got a smallpox vaccination as well)
I grew up with all of these diseases.
You had a rough childhood! All I got was the Chickenpox!
And whooping cough.
Whooping cough in infants is a very serious disease and only thanks to modern ICU care is not as fatal as it once was.
Oh yes, ....Let’s not forget the polio vaccine. VERY important!
I have, over the years, had several acquaintances who were crippled by the disease. I dated one ( a physician). Some seemed to fully recover but then later in life had weakening of the affected muscles.
The "Buck" stops where?? He could have taken action to STOP it. Instead he has done just the opposite, in spades. I BLAME HIM AND THE ROTTEN TO THE CORE CONGRESS HE RODE IN ON!
Yes, we can blame Obama.
His administration is responsible for selective enforcement and selective prosecution in addition to opening the borders even more than they were before. Add to that outrages like F&F, and Obama hasn’t just kept the status quo, he’s made the problem exponentially worse by undermining our most fundamental defenses.
Does this mean the flu vaccine isn’t working?
The flu vaccine is only about 60% effective, according to the CDC. How well the vaccine works can vary based on your age and health, as well as how good the “match” of the vaccine is to this year’s flu strain.
Each year, the vaccine is made from three strains of the influenza virus that researchers suspect will be the most active. So far, according to the CDC, this year’s vaccine matches well with the most predominant type of flu spreading in the United States, but is less well matched to the No. 2 type of virus.
The vaccine usually works best in young, healthy people, according to Dr. Bill Schaffner, chairman of the preventative medicine department at Vanderbilt University. But even if you do get the flu, the vaccine can protect against harsher complications.

Will the flu vaccine make me sick?
The virus used in the flu shot is a dead virus, Gupta says. “You cannot get the flu from a flu shot.” But your body’s immune system will react, and that can make you feel pain in your arm or feel less than 100% for a few days.

I get a flu shot. I got one last November and got the flu January 1, but was only sick two days. By the third day I felt a lot better. I used to get the flu and be sick 5-7 days. I think the vaccine helped shorten the illness. Only side effect I ever had was soreness at the injection site for a few days.
let the anti-vaccination crowd begin the blather....

Interesting article.
A mulsim cleric has issued a fatwa against using the polio vaccine. One could not have a more ignorant dangerous bunch of people.
Part of the plan, open borders with amnesty over power the health care and welfare systems along with rampant spending and selective healthcare break the government. Disease, poverty and social unrest reduce population levels while leaving national socialists firmly entrenched over a three tier society, the proles, government workers, and the elites and industrialists, all controlled by the “party” leader.
I remember standing in block long lines to get vaccinated against polio. What a relief for my parents.
And polio of course. I think they should stick to the basics for children, especially small children. If parents want all the extra vaccines when the children are older, then fine but I hate the attitude that all children must have all the vaccines available for everything known to man, and must have them all when they are just little babies.
The only part i didn't like about german measles was being quarantined!
I don’t get the shot. And I don’t get the flu.
Measles can be prevented by the combination MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. In the decade before the measles vaccination program began, an estimated 34 million people in the United States were infected each year, of whom 400500 died, 48,000 were hospitalized, and another 1,000 developed chronic disability from measles encephalitis. Widespread use of measles vaccine has led to a greater than 99% reduction in measles cases in the United States compared with the pre-vaccine era, and in 2012, only 55 cases of measles were reported in the United States.
However, measles is still common in other countries. The virus is highly contagious and can spread rapidly in areas where vaccination is not widespread. It is estimated that in 2008 there were 164,000 measles deaths worldwidethat equals about 450 deaths every day or about 18 deaths every hour.

My brother, sister and I all had measles, mumps and chicken pox. I remember being so sick with mumps and the room had to stay dark, though I never knew why. So glad there are vaccines now.
