A Sorry Apology
Slate ^ | November 8, 2013 | John Dickerson

Posted on 11/09/2013 7:44:41 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

In his interview with NBC News on Thursday, President Obama tried to offer an apology for those who are losing their health care plans because of the Affordable Care Act, as well as do damage control. He failed at both....

.....When you apologize late, it makes people think that you don't really mean it and you've been forced into it as a last resort. You know who knows how to do it right? Barack Obama. In 2009, when former Sen. Tom Daschle was up for an administration post and had to withdraw, Obama ate the frog right away. "I think I screwed up," Obama said. "And I take responsibility for it and we're going to make sure we fix it so it doesn't happen again. I campaigned on changing Washington and bottom-up politics," Obama continued. "And I don't want to send a message to the American people that there are two sets of standards—one for powerful people and one for ordinary folks who are working every day and paying their taxes."....

.....if the president took real responsibility—as he did over the botched Daschle appointment—and admitted at some level that that there were unique failures in his own administration, it might leave alive the possibility that a big job like this could be carried out by a more competent team. That's a tough thing to say for someone who is trying to dig himself out and keep his signature program alive, but it's not possible to be sorry and not be responsible at the same time.

A “Sorry” isn’t what we want or need. We want and need the entire Obamacare mess repealed and the old, well-functioning market-based system restored. I couldn’t possibly care less if he “apologized” or “took responsibility.” Well, that’s not entirely true…I’d actually be pretty happy if he took the noble and traditional Japanese way out when one loses face.

When you might go bankrupt because the plan you have won't truly cover your bills when you get sick, that's frightening. The president launched the Affordable Care Act to attack all of that worry. As the president sees it, despite the worries of today, people are still not as bad-off as they were when they were subject to the full mercy of the previous system. (That’s likely to be true for the majority of those in the individual market.) In that system, there was no relief in sight. Now he can at least offer the hope that, despite the great botch, help is coming—once healthcare.gov lets people sign up.

This seems like a complex decision that is better off being made by individuals in the open market than by government regulation.

As of 2008 apologies mean very little to the majority of people.

He’s stolen our medical care.

He’s a fraud - a thief - a liar.

Exactly!

It wasn't even an apology. He acted like he wasn't even responsible, that he was sorry people were hurt by "forces outside his control".

All this harm for something that was never needed. The mythical 30 million without coverage was a lie. A big chunk of this number were people between jobs who only went without coverage for a matter of months and "invincibles" who choose to not buy insurance because they are young and in good shape. We were sold a "sob story" and single women bought it.

Now the greatest healthcare system in the world is being destroyed right before our eyes. I have been blessed to find a Christian Healthcare co-op and a concierge doctor which has let me find a way to stay outside govt control, but how long will these things be allowed when people find a two tiered system has developed.

I'm getting so sick and tired of supporting people that are right and seeing the majority swept away with "pie in the sky fantasy's" and then being stuck with the consequences of their idiocy. Lord, help us.

“I’m sorry you misunderstood me” is not an apology at all, and it makes my blood boil every time I hear one of these a-hole idiotic talking heads call it one.

Pardon me if I don’t click the link. the big pussies at the slate whining because the apology is somehow insufficient just isn’t interesting, other than perhaps clinically.

Even his fans gloat that, had he not lied, they would not have been able to pass Obamacare.

They may “apologize’ … but they gloat too.
