Former MSNBC Host Loses Catostrophic Insurance, Is Baffled

Former MSNBC host Dylan Ratigan recently got a rude awakening about Obamacare when he received a cancellation notice in the mail for his catastrophic insurance policy.

I bought a catastrophic health policy for $170/mo when I left MSNBC. Obamacare cancelled the policy. New rate $600/mo. Thnx Mr. President! — Dylan Ratigan (@DylanRatigan) November 8, 2013

Interesting discussion...many seem to think paying a high deductible in exchange for low cost catastrophic should be outlawed? I disagree. — Dylan Ratigan (@DylanRatigan) November 8, 2013

Serious question...do you guys think simple catastrophic coverage should be outlawed? If so, why? — Dylan Ratigan (@DylanRatigan) November 8, 2013

I have been a long time advocate of catastrophic with a transparent mkt for routine. Struck me as interesting that that is illegal now. — Dylan Ratigan (@DylanRatigan) November 8, 2013

We've known for years Obamacare would get rid of catastrophic insurance plans, Ratigan just wasn't paying close enough attention. The good news is, Ratigan isn't being a hypocrite on this issue and has been a critic of Obamacare since the beginning by pointing out the cronyism between the government and healthcare insurance companies. A flashback from 2009:

MSNBC's Dylan Ratigan Yells at Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL)

In many of these discussions, people focus on the premium rise, and rarely mention the other factors that are degraded, like deductible and maximum out of pocket cost. I wonder if Dylan’s policy is “better” as well as more expensive?

By the way, I’ve also seen little discussion of why there are so few simple, high-deductible catastrophic policies.

My own thoughts on this is that if you don’t have a pricing club, the insurance companies worry that you’ll hit the deductible level too fast. And, it just isn’t worth it to them to provide both price mointoring and a high-limit policy.

It isn’t worth it to the Government to allow it, because if you buy fairly priced medical services out of your own pocket, and fairly priced, real insurance, how are they going to hit you for the cost-shifting they need to carry the parasites?

Go back to Dreamland, Ratigan. The real world is more than you can handle.

It’s not enough to jar the liberals out of their voting patterns.

#1. I never liked him anyway.

#2. I have no capacity to listen to someone who asks a question and then pretends to be the smartest person in the room by constantly interrupting, as if he is an interrogator.

Made it 1/2 way through the video and had to abandon it.

I bet he's covered for maternity care and abortions. He's also approved for annual pelvic exams.

It's interesting. Ratigan actually appears to be a convert who had an epiphany: Ratigan Gives Up Fame and Fortune.

But he was on MSNBC (I watched him a couple of times..for a nanosecond or so) and he is pictured in front of a People for the American Way poster.

So uh...he seems to be somewhat responsible for our current political reality but apparently is in the middle of making amends.

Too late.

Obama is still saying that MOST people will see cheaper prices and that is only a small percentage that will increase.

MOST people will see a decrease in price and better coverage? Only a "small" percentage get an increase. Is this true or MORE Obama lies???
