Moments after the Senate passed a historic measure to outlaw workplace discrimination against gays, activists turned their attention toward President Barack Obama and a long-sought executive order that would have the same effect, though on a much smaller scale.
"We call on President Obama to send a clear message in support of workplace fairness by signing this executive order," said Chad Griffin, president of the gay advocacy group Human Rights Campaign.
The quick shift underscores the reality that the bill is unlikely to ever reach Obama's desk. While the anti-discrimination measure passed comfortably Thursday in the Democratic-controlled Senate, it may never get a vote in the GOP-led House because of Speaker John Boehner's opposition.
But gay rights groups and the White House appear to have differing views of the opportunities presented by that political landscape.
While activists take Boehner's opposition as a clear sign the president should act on his own to extend workplace protections to gays and transgender people, White House officials see an opportunity to cast Republicans as outside the mainstream on gay rights, an issue where public opinion has rapidly shifted.
"We will use this as an opportunity to ramp up pressure on Republicans to act on the bipartisan legislation that was passed in the Senate," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. "We welcome the opportunity to have a public debate with Republicans on this issue."

They want a ‘reach-around’?
So if a self-professed homosexual doesn’t get a certain job, they can sue for discrimination? How exactly does one prove they are homosexual? I have never been asked my sexual orientation when applying for a job. I have also worked with quite a few homosexuals over the years and no one ever seemed to treat them any differently than anyone else. What is the real reason for this law?
There are already laws on the books that outlaw workplace discrimination based on race, sexual preference, gender, etc. Why do we need another one specifically for gays?
The real reason is so they can force companies to cater to them when they normally wouldn’t ... wedding photographers, etc. It’s the next step in the agenda. After that wall falls, they’ll take on the churches.
But this is about employment. Are homosexuals having a hard time finding jobs? Looks like Hollywood hires plenty. I don’t understand the need for the law.
As for churches, though, you are absolutely right. I think that is their bottom (oops) line. Destroy Christianity, then they won’t have to be reminded of what sin is.
They can’t destroy Christianity ... but they will certainly try to force the churches to perform “weddings.”
They can’t destroy it but they can certainly make it very difficult to practice.

That’s one reason. I’m sure the other reason is to gain
access to children. All homosexuals are perverts and most
perverts prefer children. Remember we are dealing sick and
twisted people. There is nothing normal about homosexuality.
You don’t even need to do desperate things; you just need to claim that you do. You only need to be a liar, not a perv.
So what is to stop anyone, hetero or homo, from suing if they don’t get a job? How can you prove you didn’t get a job because of your sexual choices? And who asks about sexual choices when you are applying for a job? I have applied for many jobs over the years and was never asked. So I am confused.

This is about “Walter” being able to wear his wig and dress to work.
A 300-pound guy in a dress would probably have a strong case.
