Greek riot police have cleared the headquarters of the defunct national broadcaster, temporarily detaining at least two journalists.

The raid, ordered by the prime minister, began at 4am local time, causing a clutch of journalists and technicians guarding the facility to scramble.

ERT was shut down in June when the government sacked the network's 2,700 staff as part of cost-cutting measures linked to Greece's €240bn (£202bn) bailout programme.

Government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said the eviction was "legal" and that a prosecutor had escorted police during the operation at the sprawling compound north-east of Athens.

I had to read several articles to figure out what was going on.

As part of the new austerity package the "more right than the other parties" government shutdown the entire national broadcast network, ERT, which was sort of Greece's equivelent of the BBC. This allowed them to fire all 2,700 union employees who were all political appointees.

The government immediately started a new national station with only six hundred employees. They want to move the new station into the old headquarters but the ex employees like good government drones kept coming to work and broadcasting for five months after being fired. So the police cleared them out.

Similar things have been happening in Argentina. Except there the government has been siding with the fired employees who “occupied” their former workplace, allowing them to stay and run it.

Coming soon to an Obamaized nation near you.

I has a fantasy about President Palin doing just that to PBS. Is that wrong?

Yes. A conservative would shut down a government run broadcast service. A RINO would try and create a more efficient one, which is what the Greeks are doing.

When you have bad laws it makes no sense to attempt to fix them by adding more bad laws to them. Rescind the bad laws and admit your mistakes. I know, pipedream.
