For those uninitiated in California gangster nomenclature, a quick primer: The number 14 is short hand for Nuestra Familia, the gang that claims the color red. N, of course, is the fourteenth letter in the alphabet and, therefore, the roman numerals XIV are often used to represent the gang.
Now comes the Class of 2014 from Cosumnes Oaks High School in Elk Grove, a city of more than 150,000 residents near Sacramento, who’ve designed a class sweatshirt with an XIV emblazoned across the chest. To some parents, local police and students, the insignia is an imprint for the notorious gang — whether intentional or not. And the kids who flaunt the moniker may become targets for violence.

Wasn’t Oakland Raider gear (jackets, hats) also considered gang gear for a while?

we were just talking about this the other day... why do thuggish/gang-y folk like the Raiders? (i am absolutely not saying all Raiders fans are thuggish... being from the Bay Area, i know lots of very nice, respectable people who favor the Raiders)... and i said it was because of their team colors... black and silver... if the Raiders were blue and gold, red and gold, or purple and gold, or red and blue, orange and blue, even blue and silver, they would not have some of their gang-y fans... those other colors don't look mean enough... tough enough... gangster enough... of course, i am just speculating... mis dos centavos...

A few years ago, in Houston there was a ‘vicious murder by a student’ that happened in a park in daylight. Media played up the victimhood status of the deceased. Until it came out that he was a member of the Mexican gang MS-13.
A number of professional teams started offering black ballcaps and other garments, regardless of team colors “because that’s what’s in!”.
