'Dying' Russia Is On Pace To Record Natural Population Growth in 2013

Rosstat recently released their latest batch of demographic statistics. Nothing particularly bizarre or unexpected happened, but the data show that births have held steady at their 2012 level while deaths have modestly decreased. This means that, if the trends from the January-September period are maintained for the entirety of 2013, Russia will record natural population growth of roughly 13,000, its first natural population growth since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Now in one sense natural growth of 13,000 out of a total population of 143,000,000 sounds puny and unimpressive. However, as I never tire of reminding people, it wasn’t all that long ago that Russia was naturally shrinking by hundreds of thousands of people per year. To give some extent of the rapidity of recent improvement, here’s a chart showing the natural change in population per 1,000 from 1992-2013:

13,000 is more than we are growing through births. Russia is one of the few countries that really understands their demographic situation and is working on improving it.

According to this Russia’s abortion rate has declined steeply form the unreal numbers in the early 90’s, which would tend to support this. It could be that they are just using better birth control now, I suppose. Does anyone know if there is an official Russian Orthodox position on birth control within marriage? I have heard different things from posters on here before.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/markadomanis/2013/02/09/are-there-really-13-abortions-for-every-10-live-births-in-russia/

“So, in 2012 there were about 42 abortions per 100 live births, not 130. The last time the number of abortions exceeded the number of births by 30% or more was in 2002. Additionally, rather than representing “the most grisly statistic the world has ever seen,” an abortion rate 30% larger than the birth rate was actually a huge improvement from rates that prevailed in the early 1990s”

‘The most grisly statistic the world has ever seen,’ at least according to this, was a peak of something like 280 abortions per 100 live births in the early 90’s. Yes, that is pretty grisly. I wonder how some of the Asian cultures like India or China where sex selective abortion is commonly practiced compare.

This is welcome news for Russians, they are the pioneers in the recovery from Communism, and people vote with their feet, more remaining in Russia because of the improving outlook.

Russia will at some point in the not too distant future once again experience natural population loss: the youth cohort born during the chaotic 1990′s is simply too small to keep births at their current level.

Then again, where there is opportunity, producers will immigrate, and there will be young adults among them.

This was one of the issues Russia had going forward. Looks like Putin’s social agenda is working.

Meanwhile... in the communist kingdom of Obamaland...

There are a host of policies a special family commission has undertaken to encourage the rebuilding of the Russian family, with as many babies as possible.
