Texas Senate race 2014: Voters thirst for John Cornyn alternative

GOP primary voters aren’t thrilled with Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and nearly half wish they had a more conservative Senate candidate to support, a new poll finds.

According to a survey from Public Policy Polling, 49 percent of GOP primary voters want a more conservative Senate candidate than Cornyn, who is up for reelection next year, while 33 percent back him. His approval rating clocks in at 46-33 percent among those voters.

Sixty-two percent of Republican primary voters surveyed think more highly of the state’s junior senator, Republican Ted Cruz, than they do of Cornyn.

But the Texas primary filing deadline is in December, and no serious challenger has emerged yet to take on the well-funded, well-known Cornyn. The poll also found that he led potential Republican challengers — including tea party favorite Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), who has given no indication that he’s running — by wide margins. Another tea party darling, conservative historian David Barton, said on Wednesday that he wouldn’t run — and Cornyn beat him in a match-up, too, 51-18 percent.

In a hypothetical Democratic match-up, Cornyn bested San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro by double digits, the poll showed.

The poll of 500 Texas voters and 388 GOP primary voters was conducted Nov. 1-4. The overall survey has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.4 percentage points; the Republican-focused survey’s margin of error was plus-or-minus 5 percentage points.

I think Barton would have been great but if he doesn’t feel ready he’s probably not ready.

It's hard to have a runoff with only one candidate.

Erick Wyatt and Dwayne Stovall and Linda Vega are also in the race.

Cornyn’s problem isn’t lack of conservatism as much as it is beltway-itis. He’s a lost cause with K Steeet and the DC society playing a bigger role in his decisions than voter’s wishes.

he drew 18% without even so much as lifting a finger. that’s pretty impressive.

it would’ve been a heckuva race.

Yes, it’s a common thing for DC political residents! Money and politics mix too well for most folks. Odds that anyone elected gets out without being corrupted is about 5%.

Actually, still waiting for one of those fellows/ladies. If there is one, they will be a shoe-in for the Presidential office. Well, if it was not for the other corrupt 55% of the electorate that wants their stuff!

John Cornyn's legacy as Chairman of the NRSC -

Cornyn's handpicked Senate candidates:

Arlen Specter - Democrat
Charlie Crist - Democrat
Lincoln Chafee - Democrat
Lisa Murkowski - Independent

Republican candidates stabbed in the back:

Ken Buck
Sharon Angle
Christine O'Donnell
Joe Miller
Larry Elder
Charlie Summers

Ignore Cornyn's words. Look at his actions. Tell me how that fraud has any conservative cred whatsoever.
